Recommend it - easily worth 2/3 hours of time to anyone with even a passing interest in military aviation.

If you want the real deal go to the National Army museum in chelsea just down the road from the hospital, you wont be disappointed

Excellent. Had been really looking forward to visiting the Imperial after so long and felt totally deflated reading the OP. Thanks.

I say this with a heavy heart Kerm but save yourself the trouble - if you remember what it used to be like you will be devastated by what its been turned into. Have a day out in RAF Hendon (excellent if you are into planes), IWM Duxford or the Army museum in Chelsea which is ok, but which used to be the poor relation of the IWM.

K thats what i said in my post, its always IMO been better than the IWM, hopefully Kerms will have a great day out there

Have to disagree on that, the basement at the IWM was huge and covered WWII comprehensively. I guess the Army museum had more of a focus on purely the British side of things and also looked back at stuff way before the 20th C. Where as the IWM focused on WWI and WWII and had a display on pretty much every front and major battle as well as the uniforms and weapons of every single country you can think of. The Blitz experience was great and quite scary as a kid - they even had the smells of smoke and cordite once you came out of the shelter after the 'bombing' during which the bench you sat on in the dark would shake as you heard the bombs fall. The WWI trench was great too, as was the whole WWI part.

I'm still gutted its all gone. b******s.

Royal Armouries in Leeds is superb. Trounces the IWM. Spent hours in there when last in Yorks.

Took the kids a few months back ... Went on a Sunday and it was PACKED ... Could only do the 1st world war ... Slow people in front of us. There is a trench experience of sorts but nothing like the old one. My kids were more interested in the visiting horrible histories display which I got dragged into ... For me the V2, mark 1 tank and p51 hanging overhead were highlights ... Sadly they're gone ... The new iwm has a (what appears to be) harrier and spitfire but they look too large/small to be the real thing.

Don't get the idea around the burnt out iraqi cars either.

Ok K i think were agree to disagree, I'm slightly biased as the national army museum was about the army and only that, so most of my regimental history was on show, plus the WW1 trench was a better one with it's sniper steps and observation slits.... Your right though the IWM always looked at the bigger picture and featured the civilain impact of conflict

Takes a committee of experts to spend £40m and end up with something worse! Sounds like it probably been dumbed down. Will not be re - visiting.
The Army museum is worth a visit - smaller but good if interested in Army history. Hendon is brilliant.
I spent all day there and it virtually empty during the week in school time. I want to visit Greenwich next - Maritime museum.

Cant diasagree more with the critique on the redevelopment of the museum.

Its a fantastic museum thats been brought bang up to date. The WW1 exhibition is top notch as is the family at war section.

Go early on a week day when you can take abit longer at the displays.
