One observation I'll make is that during EU debates on Hol I've frequently read posts from EU fanboys that promote the idea that one of the main reasons we should love and protect the institution is because it's saving us from war....Bah! Now, my own position on EU actions in the Baltic aside it is without doubt that the role the EU have played in encouraging previously Russia satellite states to think that they can become apart of NATO and the EU has led directly to this military situation.....First Georgia and now Ukraine. It would be quite amusing really if it wasn't actually connected to people dying.

Why won't it happen? Long range bombers is all they need....That's what they want and that's what Russia are providing.....Knock out that runway and we are fecked. Complacent defence reviews assume far too much......You can't defend a nation's interests on positive assumptions. Edited by Stirlingsays (20 Feb 2015 1.44pm) Firstly The bombers are very old stock (knackered)
Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

Putin and the whole aggressive Russia scenario.....Anyone want to put out any guess where this will all end? With the Ukraine reinstating its agreement not to join any military alliances. The Crimea will remain Russian, possibly after another vote, but the outcome was never in any doubt. Sanctions could continue for some time, but they only strengthen Putin domestically.

Anti aircraft isn't going to be effective against high level accurate bombing. As for ground troops....without air cover they are sitting ducks.

The old USSR collapsed exactly because of financial failure.......Russia isn't Iran.....People there will take so much for so long....They have become quite use to better economics over the last decade. Putin would have to go backwards to the secret police to ensure his position.....that and economic collapse is going to be more and more risky for him internally. Personally I think Putin is going to push for all the concessions he can against a weak and pathetic sissy west and then before the reserve runs out pull back....Keeping his gains like Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. I hope I'm wrong personally but Putin knows the mentality of the playground and no one wants to fight him back.....So he's gonna take your dinner money. Edited by Stirlingsays (20 Feb 2015 4.52pm)

Edited by Stirlingsays (20 Feb 2015 4.52pm) You may be right about the financial implications but i doubt that the EU will be able to keep the sanctions up for another 18 months, cracks are already begining to show with Hungary & Greece among others questioning the use of sanctions (obviously the greeks could just be using this as a lever rather than a genuine position). Until the economy faceplants Putin is getting stronger. The Crimea is staying Russian and from what i've read any vote would confirm this. Eastern Ukraine will probably stay semi-independent as a buffer zone between Russia & NATO.

Argentina have been "loaned" 12 SU-24's ... what are the odds they'll attack the Falkland islands again? HMS Dragon already on it's way. They are old shiite 70s-80s ...might have been useful the first time around but a couple have recently been downed by the Israelis and Ukranian rebels "throwing sticks" at them. Still, any warplane is better than what the Argies currently have - looks like the world is becoming a very dangerous place again.

This development is massive in terms of Falklands defence if Russia have really given these aircraft.

As a democrat I can't accept these outcomes.....If what you say happened what's to stop Putin's other ambitions. Regions of countries don't just decide for themselves what nationality they are without consultation and agreement from the host nation. Russia can't decide the make up of other countries. What the feck is NATO for?

Hmmm, I like Putin, he got a cheeky smile, but I like the way NATO are doing nothing. Attachment: Harry Hill.jpg (12.00Kb)
You're asking me what it's all about, and I can't tell you because I don't know what's going on myself. |
