I thought this was going to be a story of a Troll living under the Dartford Bridge, with Billy Goats Gruff...... and stuff.

Does the traffic move any faster though ...or is it the same old bottleneck?

The work won't be finished until next April and, at the moment, it's about the same as it always was. They have reduced the number of lanes approaching the tunnel so there's always going to be a degree of slowing down. For myself, at least I can now get a discount by opening an account, which previously only residents of Dartford could get. The worst is when part or all of the crossing has to be closed (usually accidents, high winds, etc.) as the whole area, for miles around, gridlocks for hours; recently a gridlock started after lunch and went on until late evening.

/ This. All you have to do is stick at least £10 in a pre-pay account and it will only cost £1.67 each way. I only use it once a month at most, and now won't have to worry about making sure I've got £4 change every time I do.

As for foreign drivers, they can be fined just like we can if we get flashed by a speed camera whilst abroad.

From what I've read, foreign drivers will be exempt. We were promised that when the bridge was paid for, the tolls would go - that didn't happen! Instead they just keep going up. Now they're saying the money will go towards road maintenance. Let's face it - it's just another tax that will go to the Treasury.

Interestingly, to compare with the Humber Bridge toll - that used to be about £3.50 but they reduced the price a year or two ago to £1.70.

PS: I will in future use the Blackwall Tunnel, although they are talking about putting a toll on that too. How are we meant to get to the rich, fertile lands of the North and Scotland?

Foreign drivers/vehicles aren't exempt. Though I would make them still pay at the crossing itself. You can have two queues at airports, why not at a toll?

They fee should have long been stopped, but probably never will be.

But the point of the new system is to do away with the toll booths and the subsequent queues? How you you make foreigners drive through a toll booth while allowing everyone else to flow freely?

Put up signs on the approach that says non-UK vehicles must use lane x or y. The same way you filter traffic off of the motorway.

Optimistic as ever

I am over from Germany for Christmas.

I was pleasantly surprised to drive through without being charged. Then I remembered this thread (thank you HOL).

Could somebody advise me on exactly what I need to do to avoid a fine?

I have to say there isn't a single sign up warning unsuspecting tourists that they have to pay. There is no way as a visitor you would realise that there is a fee. Which I find totally unacceptable. I'll pay it because I know about it but if I was a normal tourist I'd refuse to. It's scandalous to charge motorists without even warning them beforehand.

Just paid online.

It's actually a good idea. I think in Sydney they have a similar system which works really well.

Just the implementation and especially the communication is completely cackhanded.

Is it a public sector project? Or is it owned by a foreign company?

A cynical person might think they've dome it deliberately to make money on fines...

Have to say I drove through this the other day and saw about 4 signs saying you had to go online to pay and the web address too.

Really? Which direction?

I might have missed one sign, but four?

There were lots of roadworks and I saw speed limit signs but no signs warning about payments. This was coming from dover.

Massive tailbacks on Sunday morning- not sure what caused it but went all the back to junction 3 which was miles- luckily I was going the other way.

Not as bad as I thought it would be but I think a lot of people are going to be stung as Mr Johnny pointed out.

Sunday morning was horrendous, so even though I had pre paid, i ended up going through the Blackwall Tunnel, and home over the bridge. As I didn't set up an account, I take it my £2.50 will be lost, or will still be valid when I next go over bridge?
I think £2.50 one way is a rip off.
