This one is for older contingent , i have got this very very vague memory of my dad taking me to watch Palace play Real Madrid, I am 59 now and i think the match was in the early 60's i was about 7 or 8, my dad isn't around now , and something that has stuck in my mind also was the the match was to mark to turning on of some new floodlights... Can someone clarify this for me.....

Here's the Real Madrid team lining up under our new floodlights, the legendary "Galloping Major" Ferenc Puskas nearest the camera.

A couple of action photos to follow.

Brian Wood is No 5 and Andy Smillie facing the camera to left. The Madrid No 7 is Tejada according to the programme.

I have touched the shirt worn by Madrid No 5 Santamaria as Brian Wood swapped shirts with him after the game and has brought it to the club on one occasion.

Johnny Byrne is close by as Madrid right back Casado clears.

Our kit is to die for.

What an amazing coup it was to get then 5-times European champions Real Madrid to play at our ground.

That was a magical night capped by a goal from our Terry Long who smashed our third goal into the Holmesdale net in 4-3 defeat, even the pouring rain could dampen our spirits.
It was some week for me as days before the game I was treated to a memorable view of the Real Madrid team up close.
My mate's and I were allowed into training sessions at Selhurst quite a few times and during one we were hanging around and Madrid players took to the pitch...we could hardly believe our eyes as Puskas & Co went through their training warm up in front of us.
We couldn't make out what they doing as they stood around the centre circle making whistling type noises...this seemed strange at the time as they never had a ball...that's how far advanced of us they were.

All those years ago we were languishing in the third division with no thoughts of top flight football so that evening was really something special for us.

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................

24,740 according to the Breedon Complete Record. But Ian King's later version says over 25,000.

I stand to be corrected, but I think it was the 1st time Real Madrid had played in London.
