I recall 'Alan Whittle' with his flowing blond locks. When he was in full swing and charging down the pitch his hair sometimes resembled hair that had been blown dry by a windmill !

If Jacko hadn't made an early outstanding save from Ian Story-Moore it could have been a very different outcome !

I've followed Palace since 1963, but I was 18 in 1972 and hardly missed a match... sadly I missed that one!

Back then when things got tough a shout of "Bring on Whittle" would spread around the ground. He was a bit like Johnny Williams in looks stature and skills. He stood out as he wore white boots.

If I remember right Hoof......."5ft 2 eyes of blue Alan Whittle after you"

Selhurst Park was buzzing when he came on!

And Len Chatterton used to drive the "Flatterer" at half time!

when was the "flatterer" retired?

The Flatterer was retired after a few weeks.... it kept breaking down.

One half time interval it took Len nearly 10 minutes to get it restarted.

For a while it was stuck in the penalty area by the Holmesdale!

I remember we played Everton in a cup match back in January of 1972 which ended 2-2 - there was a bit of a dust up in that game and a certain Alan Whittle , then of the blues, was right in middle of it. He wasn't so popular then

Alan Whittle could fall over in the Palace area and end up winning a penalty at the other end. One of the 'magic' three bought in by Bert Head. The other two were Don Rogers and Ian Phillip from Dundee, a Scottish U23 half-back. He was very stylish but left after a short time as he suffered from home sickness. I remember seeing him sitting in the Red Deer in South Croydon with his fiancée. He looked very uncomfortable and conspicuous but no-one approached him as to respect his privacy, I suppose. When he'd gone back home I regretted not saying hello. There was a small group of Palace fans in the area and we may have made him feel a little more welcome. As it was, he played out his career with Dundee and never went further internationally. A pity, as he really was a very cultured type of player.
