Sorry but disagree, not about how good he's been but the whole small club thing. Look at Lambert et al. His biggest problem is that he has spent relatively little time at RB this season filling in at CM & LB. Southampton are not a lower Prem club. Neither are they a small club and Lambert has only got in as we really have a massive shortage of decent English forwards. There are lots of good English defenders, Shaw has gone in as he is the 'next big thing'. Curtis Davies at Hull has been very good all season, better than Smalling & Jones but is overlooked, Ward the same, especially as you say, has hardly played his natural position all season. Whilst there is a case to argue these players are used to the big occasion due to the clubs they play for, I think that consistency is vital and disregarding those players who are is naive. They finished top half this season yes but only two seasons in PL after some time in the wilderness. They do have a rich history but that is all a long time ago now. In the grand scheme of things they are a small club, like us a predominantly selling club. They may be at the top end of "small clubs" and are certainly above us but they are a relatively small club none the less.

As someone else has said he needs to play right back consistently to get in with a shout ! Roy could well have turned up to see him play and he was stuck in midfield or left back !

Not a single player from outside the top 8, save for the "rock and a hard place" decision that is always who warms the bench for Joe Hart
Why? Apart from a couple of months he's been solid/good throughout his career. Unless those couple of bad months define his entire career, like it does with every England player.

Just a quick reminder on Joel Ward as a natural RB. He's not. Other than the odd filling in, his natural position is in centre midfield. It was Dougie that developed him at RB to start with, and I think that this is why Pulis tried to incorporate him into CM because that's where he's natural. I can definitely see Pulis trying to get him in there for next season. No complaints though, because he has more than done the job in both full back positions. Love the guy.

They may be at the top end of "small clubs" and are certainly above us but they are a relatively small club none the less. But history aside, the last 8-10 years they have been progressively getting bigger and more structured coinciding with their rise back up the leagues. Yes they have predominantly been a selling club but this summer could define them. I think they may well lose Shaw & lallana but the money the re-coup from this, which will be substantial, may well see them strengthen once again and push on. I suppose it really depends on the board and owners but if they do, with the biggest stadium in the south they could well be pushing further up the table next season. They may not be a big club but as it stands I can't put them in the small category either.

I'm not disappointed to see Joel miss out at this stage. After the short summer that the team had last year he probably doesn't need to be given a working holiday to Brazil this summer. He'll hopefully come back to Palace next season fully refreshed for the challenge ahead. His reputation won't be tarnished by association with a team that is very likely to come back disappointed. He won't have his head turned by the Big Time Charlies and if he really has England ambitions then he'll come back knowing that he has to be even better next season, which I'm sure he will be. Next season I do believe that one thing that could work in our favour, is that with only a couple of exceptions our team will be fresher than most, due to lack of involvement in the World Cup.

To elaborate on my earlier comment people on here are thinking with their heart rather than their head...ward has been great for us this season and I rate him as much as the next fan but let's look at this with a rational head. Earlier on in the season dean moxey got attacked far, far more than ward as he was seen as the weak link by opposition to get the ball into the box...ward has mopped us so much very nicely but once again, isn't as good as clyne at all, and he deserves it more than ward. Yes, granted we watch ward more than clyne nowadays but lets not kid ourselves on this. Glen Johnson has 10 years top flight & massive England experience ( whoever I don't rate him defensively) and smallimg can also play RB, as can Phil jones, both have won PL titles btw...so where exactly would ward fit into your squads, and who would he replace? We need to be realistic...just because we finished the season well and finished 11th doesn't mean our players should be getting England call-ups. And those people comparing us to Southampton..,behave yourselves...they are a cut above us in all ways...infact they are the 1 PL team we should be aspiring to be like.

To me they're not, they're successful but just by how precarious this summer may be for them demonstrates that they are not big. Should we aim to emulate them? Have a disinterested owner, soulless stadium, etc. last year everyone said Swansea was the blueprint. They are both teams I have huge respect for, especially the way they play but we need to concentrate on being the best Palace. Back to Ward, I think Clyne does have a more justified shout than Wardy but it's close.

Cast your mind back to the beginning of the season and many people on this forum were saying that we should try and model ourselves on Norwich

No it wasn't, he was playing at RB for Pompey and had previously played in midfield for them. On subject, Clyne is probably a little bit better than Joel, but Joel has the advantage of being able to fill in at several positions. I'm quite happy he's not going to Rio, let him rest up and come back fresh for us in August
