I thought that a really top keeper might have saved some of the goals against Palace in the first part of the season. But Jules has been playing blinders since then and preserved our lead in several key matches. I don't feel he could have stopped either Man City goals on Saturday. Maybe he could have gambled for the first goal and got lucky. I don't see he could have done anything different for the second. It looked as though Delaney had Yaya Toure covered but Toure powered his way past him, got lucky with the bounce of the ball and blasted it where no keeper could have reached it.

The right place at the right time

No, Dzeko was always going to win that ball, he's 15 to 17 cms taller than both Mariappa, and Dann.

I really don't think that Dzeko is that much taller than Dann.

Can any goalkeeper advise if Jules was at fault with Man City's first goal?

Should he have:

A) Caught or punched the cross before it found the striker?

B) Been quicker with his dive?

IMO, he didn't seem to command his goal area with a great deal of authority during the match.

Hope his chances (admittedly slim) of a World Cup call-up have not been jeopardised.

Will Hennessy be given a run-out before the end of the season?

You may want to watch the goal again. It was a perfect cross and a great header from Dzeko, Speroni had no time to react. The only critism maybe we didn't close Toure down quicker but to be honest it was almost impossible to defend that goal

The ups and downs of Palace have left me older than my years

Dunno about the first but I thought he ended up a bit stranded for the second

Stranded ? Great curling effort, surely Jules had no chance unless I've been seeing things ? As for the first, great curling cross and a good downward header. Again Jules had no chance IMO.In fact, bollocks. Jules had no chance.Period !!

I agree - You cannot fault Speroni for either goal.

Not allowed to criticise Speroni on here! The guy is a legend and has a restaurant named after him!

Seriously though, I thought he was poor at the start of the season and let in several goals that he should perhaps have saved. Recently though he's been outstanding and back to his best form of a few years ago. On Saturday I feel he made the wrong decisions for both goals - he should have come off his line for the first (staying on his line meant that any touch would result in a goal) and should have stayed where he was for the second when he ended up in no-man's land.

I'm a keeper and I can say with absolute certainty that Jules had no chance with either goal.

The first one was as perfect a cross as you're ever likely to see, and every striker is always taught to head the ball down as it's harder for the keeper to get down. Dzeko put an bullet of a header down where no keeper can get to.

He's been so consistent this season it's unreal. Player of the year for me.

Definitely not. No goalkeeper would have a chance with a close range downward header. The defenders were correctly positioned as well. The delivery was sublime from a fantastic player.

Jules ends up in a poor position, maybe if he's not there Toure doesn't shoot.

Think I'm gonna let him off though...he's saved our bacon enough times

Cheers

No not at fault.
Toure played a blinder.
Thats what these 'stars' are meant to do.
A pin point cross for the first, and he started and finished the second.
You just have to applaud that.

Palace 13th 2017/18.
