Big Mal was not happy with the nickname and said did not strike fear into opponents....Also thought the players looked and played better in Red and Blue......Was a bit hard to accept BUT at least the colour change was slight and not radical like Cardiff !!

Bleed Claret & Blue THEN Red & Blue!!!!!

I remember as a kid feeling that the claret and blue shirts had an old fashioned feel about them. I associated the colours and design with some previous era that included woodbines, rationing and brylcream. So I agreed with Mal. Still think it was right decision.
And would you like to go back to shouting "up the Glaziers"?

Why, does anyone shout "up the Eagles"?

For what it's worth, I'd like us to go back to the Aston Villa strip we started with and which we were wearing when I first went to Selhurst in 1953.

What songs were there that had 'glaziers' in them? Does anyone remember?

Not only did we undergo a change of colours, our change of nickname also resulted in a change of club badge.Don't recall any major protests.

Big Mal was a breath of fresh air. He was all about booze birds and publicity.

We needed a change and he gave it to us. There was a bit of grumbling at first, but with the cup run, beating some of the big boys away, and finally losing to the Saints at Stamford Bridge, he became one of us.

I didn't like the sash that came later, too much white.

It does seem strange that a manager can come in and change the fundamental basics of a club. Imagine if Pulis tomorrow said 'forget eagles I want Something relevant to the area, let's be called the Croydon ASBOs and I want black kits'. It just wouldn't happen.

I think what he did was very dynamic and forward thinking. I don't necessarily agree with changing our history though.

Don't think there were any. From memory we were not big singers back then, and anyway the ground was so open it would never be heard. I started out standing on the Whitehorse lane terrace in the late 60s before graduating to the small knot of "singers" in about 72. A very limited repertoire back then.

The only chants that sounded impressive in the mid 70's were "eagles" where the whole ground joined in and the simple "paal-ace clap clap clap" which also went round the ground. They were usually the only chants that could be heard on TV.

I started going in 74 so just after the change but I remember seeing lots of people who stayed true to claret and blue for quite a while. Scarves, Rosettes (yes rosettes )

Even Mrs Minchellas Peanut tin stayed painted claret and blue - I might be wrong but even though everything like hoardings, crash barriers etc had been painted red and blue didn't the Arfur roof stay Claret and Blue for a couple of seasons ????

Enjoyed seeing that. Strange to see shirts without sponsors logos on them now.
