I have mixed feelings. He has been with us for some time now, and always performed a consistant role for us, even though at times its hard to see what exactly that is. We need a creative midfielder alongside Jedi, I honestly think its plain to see. We need someone who is willing to go forward in counter attacks, whilst Jedi goes back. I think we are too stretched otherwise with just wingers and chamakh leading the attack more or less. Its a model that works in a way; we obviously have been very tight defensively but it comes down what you want out of a club. I would honestly rather see us go out and try and win games properly then watch the kind of performance we saw in the first half at Swansea! With two defensive midfielders, when we win the ball back deep in our half its almost impossible to build an attack.

Christ. We're going purely by stats now are we? Why even bother playing games, we can just look at who has the highest rating like a game of top trumps. KG has been in the starting XI more often than not under every manager he has had at Palace. People who work with the players every day and know more about football than anyone on this site have decided he is a valuable player and worth his place. Personally, I do think the signing of Ledley will see his contribution get a bit smaller, but writing off a player who has been so key in some of our biggest results of the last three years is ridiculous.
O'Keefe was immense when he came on. Stats don't lie.... and for me bear out my gut feeling that he's out of his depth in the Prem. I appreciate that he has had good games for us and his attitude and work rate are good. If O'Keefe was the star performer, why did Freedman, Holloway, Millen and Pulis all overlook him in favour of KG? If you want to pick out individual games how about the play semi second leg where KG was a colossus, or Everton at home? SOK looks great when he comes on, harrying and chasing the ball down but positionally he is not as good as KG. That is why he gets picked, because he is nearly always in the right place at the right time and is a great partner for Jedinak. His positioning means Jedinak can come out and make those interceptions and challenges, knowing that KG is still there in behind him. Plus he's also physically more imposing than O'Keefe. That will be the Everton game where he sent a free header back away from goal when it was easier to score ???

I'm in the 'Pro' KG camp, and believe we're more solid when he's in the team, probably because he and Jedi have the best understanding in those DCM roles. The stats don't show everything, as closing down and forcing opposition back or sideways also has an importance, particularly when our primary tactic at the moment is to bring teams on to us until the last 18 / 24 yards out, and then hit them on the counter-attack. This ongoing debate on his value and whether he should be in the team or not reminds me of Pardew when he was alongside GT. Again a player that didn't seem to add a great amount and potentially kept better players out of the team, but week in, week out was picked by Sir Steve and was a key part of our most successful team ever. I suspect Ledley will takeover the role next season if we're still in the Premier and want to become a bit more attack minded, but for the rest of this season I expect KG to continue to be a big part of TP's thinking.

Stats don't lie?! You're old enough and ugly enough to know that's bollocks, Hoof.
Stats don't lie, Opta monitor every player in the Prem and know who is doing what. You can't argue with it, so it is not bollocks.

Alex Bruce for Hull is also in the opta stats worst team and he partners Curtis Davies week in, week out who is having a great season. While I’m not saying Bruce is a good CB, he clearly offers something to Hull and Davies, maybe similar to what KG offers Jedinak. Stats don’t tell you everyting..

Its a debateable point as to whether KG has been good enough in the past. Now I do not think he can cut it so I hope somebody else will get a chance.

4-2-3-1 is played by the majority of teams in World football nowadays, which allow your fullbacks to raid wing back style. Last season we did this, but in the premier we haven't been brave enough to do that, so maybe two holders is too many if the fullbacks stay back all the time. In this way we could actually play 4-1-3-2 and add an extra forward and then KG nor SOK would play.
