Matt Clarke, goalkeper. Was good for us until(IIRC) he trod on broken glass on a night out and damaged his foot so badly he never played for us again. Ollie's Dad,Ash.

Ben Watson. Poor old Ben, injured again. The only bit lacking in his game was midfield bite, but he was an agressive player at youth level. SaW HIM V lORDSWOOD at 16 and he dominated the middle of the park with his tackling, but I suppose fear of injury inhibited his style. His passing was critisized, but I think this was due to the range and frequency of them. The passes that succeeded were remarkable.

Totally agree re: Martin and Mick Elwiss. The other I'd add to the list, although he did make it a little further than those two, is John Salako. I believe Salad would have had a 50 cap England career minimum were it not for his serious injury. When he was hurt, he was very close to moving to Liverpool which, in my view, would have sprinboarded him to real greatness. He was the really genuine talent in the Bright/Wright/Thomas years.

I used to feel sorry for Neil Smillie, pacy tricky winger usually confined to the bench and unable to make a first team spot his own.

He could knock the ball past anyone and win a foot race to it but the trouble is, once defenders figure out that's your only move they just play back off you and you cease to be effective. He had a haircut for his time, too!

Absolutely bang on about Martin Hinshelwood he was destined for greater things. two others I really rated Kevin Mabbutt(already mentioned) was on the verge of a 200k move to Arsenal(big money then) when he done his knee. Kevin Mabbutt was rated more highly than his brother Gary.

Matt Jansen - His good form led to an England call-up for the friendly game against Paraguay. However he missed out on what would be his only International football match for his nation due to a stomach bug. Then of course, that motorcycle accident in Rome, Italy during the summer of 2002, which nearly killed Jansen and long-term hospitalisation followed (he spent sometime in a coma). Geoff Thomas - Battle with Leukemia. Neil Shipperley & Kevin Phillips - Both scored in Our last two P/O Finals, yet were rarely featured in the Premiership.

Can't feel Ben Watson is too unlucky, he did score a winning goal in an FA Cup final!

I was going to put Matt Jansen forward as well. Always felt bad for him.

His battle with Leukemia didn't affect his football career; it happened after he retired and long after he had left Palace. Shipps and Phillips aren't comparable in my view. For one thing, Phillips never got fat, and for another, Shipps played a lot more for us in the Prem than Phillips ever did even if he wasn't a regular (on the pitch, rather than at the post-match buffet table). Am I right recalling his winner the last time we won at White Hart Lane, or is my mind playing tricks on me? Bundled the ball in at close range from a cross from the right wing, or I could be totally mad.

It's one of the great sadnesses that Shipps, Thomas Brolin, and Razor Ruddock never got to play in the same Palace team. It would be safe to say that the words "highly mobile spine" would never have come into match reports.

I think Wilf Zaha is unlucky. I believe he would have been banging in goals for us if he hadn't been shipped out to Manure. Moyes has destroyed his confidence. His first game for Cardiff was quite good, but the last two games he struggled. If he had stayed at Palace he would be going to Brazil this summer - I doubt that he will now. I am not sure about Wilf being unlucky. Getting a string of injuries is unlucky, but, in the long run, being left out of the first team is not about luck but about failing to show you have the ability and temperament required to deserve a place in the team. He is a very good player, but, I still have some doubts as to whether he really has what it takes to make it at the very top, and I am not convinced he would have been "banging"in the goals for us this season. After all, he didn't score that many in the Championship last year ( although granted he created quite a few). Anyway, he now has his chance at Cardiff to show if he can cut it in the Prem - time will tell.
