Back to the OP's initial comment - could Joel Ward be turned into a better midfielder than he is a RB? This is what happened to Gareth Bale. Personally I don't think so. I like him at RB and, whilst I think he could make a competent midfielder, in my opinion he has all of the attributes to make a potential international right back? Is he better than Clyne (as I rated him in the same way) is something I've been wondering. Edited by Helmet46 (01 Feb 2014 11.25pm)

I agree with the OP and there's no doubt that a player in central midfield has more influence on a game than a full back. Joel has been our best player all season and we've kept a lot of clean sheets with him and jedi protecting the back four.

Just looked him up, amazed to find he is 6 foot 2. Doesn't look it. Apparently his natural position is centre defence. Still sure he is better at right back than CM.

The best players should play in their best position...we lose something when he isn't at RB

I know where hes been playing...
Edited by bubble wrap (01 Feb 2014 10.14pm) Eh? There are plenty of people who have asked for him to be back at right back. I'm not sure what the signing of Dann, a solid centre back, has to do with this debate either? Personally, Ward has done very well in midfield. He's neat and tidy and extremely competitive. I still think he'll get some more game time there, but right back would seem to suit him more. Purely because that allows him to run at people and put in crosses more often and he has a lovely delivery on him.

He is better at RB than in midfield and clearly not a natural midfielder in terms of going to get the ball from the CBs, but very solid of course. At RB he has been fantastic this season and it would be great to see him back there and Ledley in midfield

I was having this conversation with a friend after the hull game. as good a rb he is, if we are to play him there he is wasted in the style of football we play. You can tell by his brain that he is a midfielder, the only asset he lacks is the ability to turn. This is where he will get found out when playing against better players. That said, he is doing a fantastic job slotting into cm and having to adapt to a partnership with Jedi.
