Anyone in football would know that clubs have their own ways , chants and 'terms of endearment' that those outside of the game endeavour to find offensive . The fans of the hotspurs from Tottingham are no exception .
Your friends should maybe go and support a club that is inclusive of minority and odd jobs and those who make a living of being offended . The poofters at Brighton may be their calling .

The word yid is as offensive to Jews as the word ****** is to black people. As we have a number of black players and supporters at Palace would you think it's acceptable that we refer to ourselves as ******s then - as a term of endearment of course

It's in the intention and how it is recieved, the intention is that Jewish and non Jewish Spurs fans are supporting the Jewish spurs fans. When Spurs still get songs about gas chambers then I think the intention is honourable.
However, if the Jewish Spurs Fans are uncomfortable with it, then however honourable the intentions it is misguided.

In all fairness Thommo i could not give a toss. I would hate football to become this poncey game and family friendly. But thats just me, it is the one time i can channel my s*** weeks worth of aggression into abusing a c*** of the opposition. But thats just me. I would probably shout Gas them at Spurs. But i wouldnt mean it or want it to happen.

So why chant it then... wouldn't really say thats banter.

I don't truly believe that Palace are 'the greatest team the world has ever seen' but i still chant that along with everyone else.

Can you really not see any difference between chanting something innocuous like "the greatest team the world has ever seen" and something that a great many people find offensive?

What the hell do they sing Ketteridge? Some kind of 'we won't forget them' type song?

Sounds like leaning into a punch, setting up opposition fans for some very nasty responses.

And if you really would shout something like 'gas them' EaglesMad then you have a childlike conception of what is acceptable and a complete inability to grasp the shame of our grandparents' generation.

Actually Syd, this topic has been discussed a lot in recent times across the media. You are also dealing with a section of the community that is particualrly sensitive to perjorative epithets.

It has been said that by adopting a term like "yid" it could become meaningless; neutralised by common use. Unfortunately, the terms "n****r" and "queer" are both adopted and regularly used by the black and gay community respectively and, if anything, have become even more emotionally charged than before.

Thus, my personal creed is that I avoid any ambiguity and simply use the worst terms available to describe all minority groups [when at home].

No anti-Islam songs though are there?

Surprised no one's thrown a pigs head at Anelka in response to what he did. Not that I'm recommending it but you know, an eye for an eye and all that...

It does seem that Jews are fair game for abuse but everyone is too sh*t scared to have a pop at muslim players or fans in case they start burning effirgies of you in the street.

Apparently some can't, Ian (says Syd, picking up his plastic liberal bed-wetters undersheet while retiring semi-gracefully from the thread.)
