After Cannon I'd go Ian Evans, think he was no. 6 As a lad I thought he was a classy centre back in the 70s.

I mostly saw Hilaire wearing the 11 shirt.

Jim Cannon would be my greatest player of that era, plus an honourable mention for Dave Swindlehurst who was a prolific scorer for us.

I'm 57 and my first heroes were in the 1960's, such as Cliff Holton and Peter Burridge. So Vince Hilaire (note spelling) may be a bit late for him.

Johnny Byrne might be a good guess. (No 9)

Byrne, without doubt, has no peers. He wore 8,9,10 and even 11 when numbers weren't personalised. Holton was short term & Burridge was sadly underrated.

The current owners are remiss in not recognising Byrne (or Peter Simpson)having opted for populism and turning the suite named after him into a store cupboard.

lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright.

Great post Lyeemoon.
One must always be supportive of our shared heritage.
I remember admonishing the Sports Editor of
the "Croydon Advertiser " for such poor coverage of Johnny`s early death.
I anticipated at least half of the back page to be devoted to this untimely event.

He also deserved to be better remembered than as a broom cupboard !

Thanks. My sentiments entirely and I can remember being appalled by the sparse Byrne obituary in the Croydon Ad. It annoys me greatly that I have written, emailed and tweeted Steve Parish about a tribute to JB and he has very rudely and steadfastly refused to reply.

I'd have more respect for him if he came back and gave an explanation for not honouring him rather than just totally ignoring my requests. Even Jordan wouldn't have done that.
