You cant have a go at dowie for his signings. There is no way the team that took us up would have kept us there, several loan signings for a start.

Kaviedies ventola and lakis could have been masterstrokes but didnt quite work for reasons not to do with ability. Probably more so tactically in lakis and kavs places

All we needed was a goaly.
Speroni was signed first and messed up before Kiraly came in against Villa away.
Ventola never played.
See the Charlton line up more or less the lads that took us up.
We must keep the nucleus of the team that won at Wembley this time.

Well quite obvious.
When Dowie came to Palace he motivated an under performing squad and helped get them promoted.
When it come to purchasing talent to improve that team he failed.
Failed at Charlton and is now no longer managing.

Wrong; Ventola played in the penultimate game of the season, against Southampton at home, scoring the second Palace goal in the 2-2 draw. A point that would have kept us up if we hadn't drawn with the Clowns in the final game.

Probably Dowie trying to be a genius. Quite a few signings were a disappointment.


Were they, though? In that Premiership season, we signed:

Speroni
Kiraly
Sorondo
Boyce
Ventola
Hall
Lakis
Kolkka
Kaviedes
Torghelle
Danze
Boyce

Of these, only Danze, Torghelle, Lakis and Kaviedes didn't really fit in but that was probably more down to adjustment issues than a lack of basic talent. The actual grounds for signing them were fundamentally sound. The others were all class acts.

Signing Andrews just didn't make sense; more like an irresponsible squandering of the club's money. Weird.


THE TEAM THAT PLAYED CHARLTON

Crystal Palace: Kiraly, Butterfield (Freedman 56), Hall, Popovic, Granville, Leigertwood, Soares (Powell 86), Watson (Riihilahti 89), Hughes, Routledge, Johnson.
Subs Not Used: Speroni, Ventola.

Were the only players out of your 12 that played.
And all we really needed was a goaly.


And the prick brought on Darren Powell as centre forward in the 86th min when we needed a goal and left Ventola on the bench!

Never forgiven him for that!



And for me that proves dowies mistake when we wrre in the prem a lack of willing to play the new signings and find a tactical formation that accomodated them.
