I was there!
I use to like it when he scored a header, he would do his lap of the pitch tapping his forehead.

I was there as well, 14 years old and with my Dad who was a lifelong Palace fan. A fantastic day especially the pitch invasion and the players up in the directors box chucking their strip into the crowd. I think we also went to see the first game in Division 1 a 2-2 draw with Man U at Selhurst wasn't it?

I was there what a great day (and night) that was. First time into the old Div 1. They were in Div 4 when I saw my first Palace game. About 36,000 there on the day from memory and I was on the Holmesdale Terrace. That day has left one great abiding mystery for me. At the end of the match the Palace team went up into the Main Stand and threw their shirts to the fans below. They must be among the greatest of Palace memorabilia but I have never seen any mention of them since. They're never mentioned by fans on the chat boards and I've never seen one for sale, and I would guess they would fetch a hefty price now. Does anyone know the whereabouts of any of these shirts today? Surely, some of them must exist somewhere. Not to my knowledge although there was plenty of articles collected by us fans. I and my mates ran onto the pitch from the Whitehorse end to get under the Directors box, which was boarded off in the centre of the stand in those days. The Players lined the front throwing articles of clothing and I narrowly missed out on getting one of John Jackson's socks. I felt sorry for this old boy who had climb out of his disabled car, parked as they were then in front of the Stand terracing near the Whitehorse End, but he tried in vain to gather anything either. Plenty of guys got lucky but, like you, I never managed to track any of it down.

I can remember being very impressed when my dad told me the wave was to Mark's mum, not sure if I completely believed it but I hope it's true as he was a real showman. His laps of honour used to take ages and he really milked it as only a true showman can.

I was on holiday at the time so missed the match. Listened on the radio though. The reporter said that Mrs Charlton was very impressed at being presented with a bouquet by the club - not sure if we did that for all captains wives or how long the practise lasted. Funny how these odd recollections stayed with you.

Then we do a PALACE and win 3-2. Delayed our Holiday the following Season to watch the Man U game. Great times.
