Steve Kember taught football at my primary school. He put me in goal for an away match. We lost 3-0 and I conceded from a corner (before it was fashionable to do so). I never played again for the school team.

Steve Kember used to coach my cousin when he used to go to Downside school in Purley in the late 1970s. However, Roy Hodgson (who apparently played for Palace) was my PE and English teacher at Monks Hill in 1975-76. He was also the coach for my year's school football team and I played in defence a couple of times. At the time he used to live in Farnborough Crescent in Selsdon and we sometimes walked home together. He left at the end of the year to coach in Sweden and a few years later turned up at Bristol City. The rest, as they say, is history The son of a friend went to Whitgift where John Humphrey worked as a PE teacher.

Roy went to Ruskin and Bob got his badges down in South Africa,Durban....he met up with Johhny Byrne down there and Johnny Haines,Bob's now coaching the the India National Team. Roy would be the same age as Bob,we played alongside each other in the old 4-2-4 midfield role.
........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history..................... |

Can anyone confirm whether Roy Hodgson, Lennie Lawrence and Steve Kember were in the same class at John Ruskin School? I heard this was the case but haven't seen anything on the Internet about it. I took an A-level at Ruskin while I was at John Newnham. The old John Ruskin school used to be where the windmill is in Shirley (my in-laws live on the estate that replaced the school). They renamed John Newnham as John Ruskin for some reason. A few years ago I was quite keen on Roy Hodgson coming back and managing Palace. Right now I'm really pleased that Dougie is doing well. Long may it continue!

I lived in Selhurst up to the age of 13. Had to get two London buses, 5 pence each bus, to South Croydon to go to Secondary school at Hayling Manor Purley Way. Played in the school team and the year above as a Palace fan. Having been made House captain Teddy Maybank came to our school to say he was going to be involved coaching, my parents then moved to Maidenhead... bollocks even though I saw him score for Br1ght3n against us.

"Can anyone confirm whether Roy Hodgson, Lennie Lawrence and Steve Kember were in the same class at John Ruskin School? I heard this was the case but haven't seen anything on the Internet about it." They all went to Ruskin but Kember is a year younger than the others. I suppose there is a chance they were in the same class at some point. Kember broke the school goal-scoring record in about 1964 or 5. He left the year before I started there. I'm afraid I didn't break any school records.

David Burnside (who scored a goal by balencing the ball on his shoulder) taught us football at St Johns, Shirley in the early 60's. When he was sold (to Wolves?) Steve Kember came. Kember was eventually transfered with the headmaster to Park Hill.

I was giving pony rides that day. Dick Emery opened the event, I still have his autograph. Don't know what happened to the signed team photo though. That was a sought after picture, Dick wasn't.
