just watched those clips again, was at that game, the third goal from don was absolutely brilliant, although my hero was mel blyth, have to say don rogers was the best i've ever seen at selhurst, the 5-1 defeat over sheff utd was just as memorable, don and "yogi" hughes were absolute class that day

Ah! Don Rogers, definitely my favourite Palace player. I was at the Man U game and the Stoke game in which he scored the ITV goal of the season, he was electrifying, he was a bit inconsistent but players of that skill level often are but the good bits outweighed the bad, when he was on song he put in performances that were talked about for years as we are doing now.

Photo man? Quote Eagle of the North at 25 Oct 2011 4.39pm
Sorry to state the bleedin' obvious, but I have to say what a player he was. I was bored this afternoon at work, so whilst trawling on Google I found the highlights to our 5-0 thrashing of Manchester United (we beat by five goals too City), and the memories just flooded back about this jewel of a winger we once had.

Never forget that day, standing on the Holmesdale Terrace as the goals went in and it was magic brushing Man U aside, one of the best in my life long support for Palace. I was gutted on the Monday after the game though,Man U sacked Manager Frank O'Farrell,as if being beaten by us was not our great display but because Frank O'Farrell was the reason for the defeat. Wonder if anyone else remembers the signing of Don from Swindon, for just under £150.000. However, his persistence paid off when he did land him but the strange thing was that Dave Mackay Managed Swindon for just one season and whilst other Managers there wouldn't allow him to leave Mackay did........And shortly after that he left Swindon, which seemed very strange indeed at the time. I always thought it was convenient that Mackay allowed the deal to go through just before his departure. Nice one Bert!!

Photoman........ Yes, Don Rogers. When we lost 1-0 at Liverpool that season, the Daily Telegraph's headline for the match was - "A Poet among Peasants". That sums him up completely. We have never seen a perfomance at Palace again like that 5-0 win - nearly 40 years ago now but still clear in my mind. The man is a true legend, at least as good as Lombardo who probably runs him close but he didn't win a game 5-0, did he?

Mel Blyth was at the Southampton game tonight along with David Payne. Good to know these Palace stars from the past still show their support fot this fanatastic club of ours.

Which club was Mel Blyth supporting? Seeing as he got a Cup Winners' medal there, his loyalties may be divided!
