Don't forget "tango man"!! Painted head to foot in orange. Streaked. Across selhurst after Houghtons goal!!..v clownntown in playoffs...then drove up to wembley in a tank!!..appeared in several national newspapers..what a character!!
It was my dream to play for Palace and to make my debut. I've always played for the club so if I'm playing here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. - John Bostock (Nov 2007) |

There used to be a father and son near where I still sit in the Main Stand who wore identical deerstalker hats and fawn macs whatever the weather. The son was obviously not quite all there which accounts for the fact that he was obviously dressed in the father's image even though he was in his 20s and later his 30s. We called them "The pear eaters" because in autumn they would eat highly unappetising-looking unripe pears from brown paper bags. They never spoke to anyone despite our attempts to engage them in conversation and one day in the early '90s they didn't turn up any more. We assumed the dad had died and the son couldn't really make it on his own. But they were hilarious and totally oblivious of the non-malicious amusement they provided.

Great image Jamsey. Ever since i started going to games as a 5 year old, it was as much the entertainment on the the terraces as on the pitch that enthralled me. Football - and lower league football in particular - is great for attracting real eccentrics. Does anyone remember Donald Barratt? Ran on the pitch from the Arthur Waite and confronted the ref about a decision he'd made. I think it was against Wolves in '85 and we drew 0-0. It made most of the back pages and was pretty big news at the time. Think Donald was banned for life at Selhurst but definitely saw him there regularly in the late 80's; infact during the Birmingham riot as the Brum fans scaled the Arthur barriers and chaos reigned, i recall him running past me and fist clenched ordering me to 'come on and get stuck in'.
