Hubbo Flag Near a team called Palace 11 May 11 10.35pm Send a Private Message to Hubbo Add Hubbo as a friend

I was 11. Stood with my old man on the Holmesdale around what would now be the back of block C. Most games I would get down the front but of course we could hardly move for that one. Will never forget walking back to Cherry Orchard Road and being allowed in the pub rather than having to wait outside with bottle of coke. What a night

Scary to think even at 16 I had been going to Palace full time since 1977 so for me on that night standing on the top middle bit of the Holmesdale (surging for fun) Crystal Palace were by far the greatest team the world had ever seen

Oh what a fantastic night!

Words can`t descrbe how I felt when Swindle dispelled any nervous tension when putting us 2-0 up.

Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link]

I was there on the Holmesdale!

My old man went as well (but not with me)... denying a place for a loyal supporter.... he always was a selfish cnut... sorry on his behalf to anyone who missed out.

Yes, hard to believe that warm, balmy spring evening was 32 years ago.
I can still recall the rapture when Walsh headed the first goal with only 14 minutes left on the clock.

The great thing about that match was the simple uncomplicated outcome of each possible result, with no other games involved and goal difference not being an issue. Win - promoted as champions, draw - promotion, lose - another season in Div.2.

Oh to have a winning team again!

Not to mention winning by two goals meant we robbed the seaweed scum of the title Even better to hear that the Pilot of the plane carrying Bha to an end of season promotion celebration announced our victory over the Tannoy!apparently Mullery was livid!
Have wondered ever since if the pilot was a Palace fan?

I left work bang on 5pm that evening, straight home to change ( I lived on South Norwood Hill then, almost opposite Holmesdale Road ), and in the AW for 5.45. Must have been 25,000 in the ground at that point !

A great night...not as dramatic as some others such as Wrexham away, but a fitting end to a wonderful season.

Looking back at it now Swindlehurst rode a tackle for the second goal and probably today,a player in that position, would very likely of gone down looking for a free kick
The atmosphere seemed surreal to me,after the 69 promotion, with the stadium full to the brim, with was only allowed by the police as all the fans were just Palace,so no threat of crowd trouble.
Great post much celebrations on the pitch and I felt kind of numb.
The only sour point now is that Venables took part in those celebrations....what happened after that was none to pleasant!

Look at the pictures of the Holmesdale that night. That was me - the good looking young lad before the weight of the world got onto his shoulders. I was 12, and ended up on the pitch drinking champagne from a bottle thrust into my hand by some passing fella.

I remember walking home along Tennison Road and it was crammed side to side - traffic had no chance. We will never see the like again (52 thousand - amazing mass of red and blue humanity)

Happy, happy, days. Strangely, though, aside from the scoreline, I remember absolutely nothing about the match itself.

That's probably the reason why I felt numb.
