The match, and also a glimpse into the future, cos if we move to the athletics stadium this might be our view of the pitch!!!

THE MERCANTILE CREDIT CLASSIC! Yes, the first time Palace really played at Wembley!

This was a football league centenary tournament that clubs qualified through their form in a specific set of league matches. I seem to remember we just qualified at the death.

A bit of a damp squid really with Wembley half empty - needless to say I think we were the most represented there. Anyway, we played Sheff Wed; drew 0-0 and went out on penalties with Barber I think missing the crucial one.

The Palace end

I was there! if memory serves me right qualification was through league performance in a specified number of games earlier in the season, and ultimately we qualified through a last minute goal in a match. Hazy memory now but didnt we go through at millwalls expense?

Thank God he got injured when he did in '89, cos we would not have seen Dave Madden and probably wouldn't have been promoted.

Infact, there is a credible argument to be made that had Pennyfather not got injured, promotion, FA Cup Final, 3rd in Div 1 wouldn't have happened. Fate working in our favour for a change.

Pennyfather promised a lot when he came, and he did look like he could play a bit, but always seemed ineffectual to me. Think we paid a fair bit for him for those days too. Then in struts free transfer Madden and gets the whole team by the scruff of the neck and leads us into the promised land.

he must have looked liked Pele in training one game I walked out of halfway through the 2nd half was a home defeat to Bristol City and he was the crux of the dreadful performance, couldn't pass/tackle/score/header/beat someone and one paced, all in all not great talents to have.

I remember that Luton had the section to our right and that their supporters were wearing hats which resulted in the Palace supporters singing "Who's the prat in the silly hat".

after the palace game during the second round games a group of palace supporters decided that as our section was a bit too crowded we would go into the Luton section which was almost empty. The Luton supporters couldn't believe it when we walked in and sat down on the old terracing.
