In my younger days I always looked up to Johnny McNichol,a very good captain but I guess Cannon has to be in the reckoning along with Geoff Thomas.

You beat me to it eic there's been nobody to match Johnny Mc.

John Sewell was a misnomer, a defender who never got booked much to the incredulity of Jack Charlton who I discussed it with once. The Duke played like he dressed, with panache!

lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright.

Do you know what? Ian Evans before Georgie Best snapped his leg in two was a superb captain. Jim only got the armband after that incident if memory serves. One of the great player losses to injury he was. Along with Mike Elwiss.

I remember that Best/Evans incident as though it was yesterday Kerms.
Bad enough as it was, the thing that really made me feel physically sick was the way the little b*****d,having just deliberately gone over the top and got away with it,stood with ball in hand ready to take the resulting throw in,urging them to get Ian off as quick as possible.
How I hated that man from there on in!
As for Mike, in the relatively few appearances he made for us he was quality.

ps. I was delighted when Best got his liver transplant, as it just prolonged his physical and mental battle against the bottle.

was this the game when the ref f**ked up and blew the whistle to early, the teams went off, then when he realised he's mistake he bought the teams back on for 7mins???

I think that was the following season,if memory serves.
I do remember we lost both games though.2-3 and 0-1 I think.

The Best/Evans incident was October the 1st 1977.
We lost 2-3.

The referee incident was many years later.

I beg to differ al. I was at the game in early 78/79, the year we won div2 but wasn`t at the 85/86 game, and remember it happening.
