Especially when it involves either the council or Westfield. The latest 'news' is actually 'olds' – the project has been 'officially' on hold since early last year when it was announced Hammerson/Westfield would be reworking the project to reduce retail and reuse existing buildings where appropriate. This latest release simply clarifies that. There is an upcoming meeting between the mayor, council and Westfield – whatever comes out of that will no doubt determine its future. To say it's cancelled is not accurate. On hold with no definitive start date/in the balance? Fine. Either way, I can't see it starting until 2022. There will need to be another round of planning submissions and approvals based on the revised plans, which as stated, will mean a reduction in retail and an increase in 'destination' real estate (eg. cinema) + flats. The thing I really don't understand is the level of vitriol and eagerness for the scheme to be mothballed. Makes zero sense, unless of course you don't live in Croydon and have a narrative. Then it does.

I would rather see the athletics ground redone and it would actually feel pretty great being in crystal palace and that park on a warm match day... nice. I'm not sure why people cling on to this.

And who pays for all this? We have no money and as his performance has dived Wilf is worth less so that money is likely to dissappear

I tend to think that Midlands Eagle may be right that "ringfenced" was a euphemism for promised and that some or all of it's having to be used to balance the books between income streams. If the US investors have lost interest, which would appear to be the case, there's unlikely to be any progress until they get bought out.

All that has resulted over this Westfield fiasco, is that Croydon have inadvertently managed to empty shops in the Whitgift Centre, never to be filled again except by charity shops etc. Shopping in Croydon is a depressing experience it’s a mess with overpriced car parks. The council have been hoodwinked by Westfield, why the council didn’t agree to Westfields demands without large penalty clauses, if stages of the development weren’t completed, smacks of incompetence. Edited by Painter (20 Feb 2020 2.23pm) Blame Amazon and EBay along with the laziness of the general populous to get off their asses, for the demise of all retail centres except the out of town ones with free parking. As for Croydon Council they are far more interested in gender equality and stirring up racial issues that didn’t actually exist than trying to improve the town. Complete shower the lot of them.

Edited by Painter (20 Feb 2020 2.23pm) Fair. My response was purely to cover off the incorrect assumptions being made re. Cancellation. That said, with or without them the town centre would be a state. Non-destination/experience retail is dying, rapidly (see most high streets). This is also the main reason why the council are so desperate for this to succeed, although as you point out they’ve basically prostituted themselves in the process.

Back on topic, the club have just released an interview with Parish talking about the academy and stadium redevelopment plans. Probably coincidental - either that or he’s been skim reading some of the hissy fits on this thread.

Bromley seem to have got it right with the Glades, its always busy. Only downside they don't seem to have a lift engineer and car park lifts are always breaking down.
