Just watched the programme on BBC2; made me feel sorry for the people involved, which is something I never thought I'd have to say about UKIP supporters. Old, sad, confused, frightened. The world has moved on, they didn't seem to connect. Obviously, not all UKIP supporters are like that, but those in Farage's prospective constituency seem to be lost and detached from the 21st century.
Didn't watch it. But the condescension is palpable.

I saw it too and felt exactly the same ...sorry for the people involved and sad at the outcome rather than outraged by the stupidity of it all. What a world we live in!!!!

Which half of Matt and Stirlingsays is it I wonder?
You really are desperate.
And they let you teach kids? You are a kid yourself. In what ways is the article wrong?
I didn't read your article, only skimmed it, and like most things from the Independent, appears to be slanted. Anyway, draw your own conclusions. You always will.

Didn't watch it. But the condescension is palpable. Not at all; the poor woman who was vainly attempting to get the party members (and serving councillors) to not say deranged things in front of camera certainly deserved sympathy. The UKIP woman councillor who said "I'm not racist, I just can't abide Negroes" made her finally realise the futility of her position. Before seeing the programme, the only long-term members of UKIP I knew well were a woman who worked at my office and her husband; these two were among the most unpleasant people I have ever encountered, and when she moved on there was great rejoicing by all, whatever their political persuasion. Perhaps these two coloured my views on UKIP members, and some of those who appeared in the programme seemed to be a bit lost rather than actually downright nasty. Some, though, could only be described as absolutely barking.

Reminded me of the joke with the punch line "and you f*** one sheep"; some of it was very (unintentionally) funny!

A world that has moved on and a world that has to some extent been 'foisted' upon them perhaps ?? Didn't see the programme but get a sense it was one of those you probably didn't need to. Sure there was no end of borderline loons which played into the programme makers agenda which I presume was to make them look as deranged as possible and with a bit of luck (correctly as it seems) give a nice pithy one liner for the papers about 'darkies'. There is probably no more 'lunacy' in UKIP than either the Tory or Labour parties - I guess UKIPs is just far easier to get out in the open as they as a rule aren't 'professionally' political, they aren't protected by a battery of PR people telling them what to say and running interference for them when they let something slip and the 'issues' that seem to bother them are really juicy ones that the press can salivate over and the professionally offended can really get in a froth over.

I believe that the left contains a significant amount of racists. You only have to look at the anti Israeli, anti US and anti Christian posterings of many on the left. None of which are a race. Anti-US and Anti-Iseali positioning on the left are common, given the anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist stances common on the left (arguably the Left tends to be more pro-Palestine than anti-Israeli). Witht the US being the most aggressively pro-capitalist nation its hardly surprising that the left wing, has a anti-US bias - It'd be like criticising the US as racist because it had an Anti-Soviet agenda in the 1980s. Anti-Israeli is a phrase you tend to mix up with the idea of criticising occupation of Palestine and the subjucation of the rights of the Palestinian people. Christianity - Well given Marxism is an anti-religeous movement - its hardly surprising that Western Leftists aren't supporters of Christainity. You could look at the support of Christian organisations for Governments around the world that have systematically suppressed Left wing movements (most notably in South America).

Both progs very predictable in that they portrayed UKIP as dysfunctional. The media are going flat out to discredit UKIP in as many ways as they can. It is a credit to Farage that he hasn't buckled and carries on in the face of blatant bias against him and what he is trying to achieve. He'll make a great PM.

As an aside - Mentioned in the Chelsea thread, being a cynical old sod these days it did seem peculiar that there is some wonderfully clear and well timed 'amateur' footage from the French Metro system and within hours a picture of alledged public school racist photobombing, pint in hand, Farage, accompanied by all of his social media UKIP supporting laid bare.......... Of course it could just be a bit of old 80's style Chelsea FC Racism but its all so very 'neat' and tidy.....

And London? Well, it's a world city now and has been for a while and lost its strong 'Englishness' a long time ago. Anyone who thinks UKIP can make a jot of difference to that should, however, go and live in Barking.
