I can't agree with a thesis that says if a person thinks of themselves as a Brit primarily as opposed to English(though say English,Scottish or Welsh also),there's something "mangled or meaningless" about that. Its actually perfectly in keeping with tradition. Interesting most of our recent historical (past 200 years)symbols of "allegiance" are British, not English etc..Rule Britannia was so named for a reason, the Black Watch were part of the essence of the British armed forces...The Royal Navy was a lot more than the English navy....The king was His Britannic Majesty for a reason... Being British is very distinct from say being French or Italian or American...not meaningless But,we are talking culture here,Stirling, which is something different. What would you say are the essential characteristics of English culture and how would you say those characteristics differ from British culture?..Is being partial to a curry, pint of ale and a cup of tea,English,Scottish,Welsh,or British?
What would you say are the essential characteristics of English culture and how would you say those characteristics differ from British culture? Allegiance to England would be an obvious answer to that....over and beyond that to be 'English' will mean different things to different people. An appreciation of its history and cultural rituals might matter to some..language...For some a consumeristic but independent small 'c' conservationism...lots of things. Unlike Britain, England has a patron saint and a football team. England is a nation while Britain is a 'nation of nations' if you will.....A hotpot of everything and anything. A thinning out of identity....But I grant you it's an identity still...Just a devalued one. We aren't on our own with this...In europe generally this fast demographic shifting of identity reality is being forced onto people by globalists. The English in England have to put up with a lot of passengers. According to the 2011 census only 60 percent of people in England called themselves exclusively English. I find that quite depressing. But you of course have your take on it and that's fine.

I always thought she supported the Labour party so by the look of it she has changed her allegiances I wonder why???

I don't like any hot or spicy foods, chilli-con-carne, even mustard and strong pickles. Also, curry smells horrible and looks like something the cat sicked up, those attributes put me off it too.

Stirling,we are at cross purposes... You are talking about "allegiance".I'm talking about culture...I say this because I came in on this following the UKIP party political broadcast last night, saying one of the 5 main planks of their platform was to "protect British culture".And I wondered exactly what British culture might be.....such as having a curry, fish and chips and a pint of ale.

Curry 'integral part of British culture'? My arse literally - cut out the middle-man and throw it straight down the toilet. I agree 100% it stinks and god help anyone who lives next door to a family who eats curry all the time due to their origins. Your house will stink the same as theirs. Has to be the worst type of food available and there are far too many curry shops and restaurants in the country in my opinion. Down the toilet is the best option for it.
