Okay the morning after the night before. In the cold light of day , i think the starting line up was all wrong . Wilf is not a striker and was very disgruntled yesterday and disinterested , Eze is a great player but has more impact when coming off the bench , Lakongo was also anonymous yesterday and is not anywhere near the fight we need in midfield, Anderson had a bad day at the office as did Awew and Olise . There was too many players that didnt turn up for a fight yesterday , its all very well bragging that we got a point from United Liverpool and Sandcastle but then to lose against Villa an Var is not acceptable . Villa got the points yesterday without scoring and against 10 men . Just bad luck and in my honest opinion a bad choice of starting line up . A striker that gets slagged off all week by his manager isnt going to prove him wrong from the bench .

IMO there wasn't much wrong with the line up. JPM and OE make themselves droppable, and Wilf does give us something different up top. It was just the performance.

When he scored a bet a lot of fans thought PV had picked right. But the issue is the same as we have with any of our strikers...we find it so hard to get them into the game that they are basically doing nothing for 90mins.

Ultimately, and hard to see it this way, it was a nothing game, neither team held any attacking theat. We had a marginal offside, Watkins should have scored for them.

We are at the point where we need a few lucky goals to go our way.

From a villa perspective

Flat game which we just about deserved to win because we got the goal. had you have scored first then would have probably been saying the same in reverse. The atmosphere was flat too, which probably reflected what was going on on the pitch. Thankfully for us, we played average but got the 3 points so onwards and upwards. good luck for the rest of the season.

Olive’s set pieces today were awful. Apart from the pass for the offside goal Eze did nothing. However these are the only players we have that have the ability to create anything. But you can’t start both away from home. (I am excluding Wilf as he will be gone at the end of the season.)

Mitchell must have put half a dozen crosses in to no one. Is it his fault he doesn’t look up or his teammates fault for not making the effort to be on the end of them.

Ferguson played about 10 mins away to Spurs last season. Not that I remembered as I was so pissed that day and caught Covid.

i bet Popeye wasn't happy!

It was highlighted on Match of the Day how Mitchell was caught out with balls inside the full back ,one of which led to the cross for the own goal.
This is a recurrent theme, and although it may sound harsh, I do question whether he is quite good enough defensively as well as offensively.
As a minimum he needs proper competition for his place.

To be brutally honest I have not been impressed with Mitchell both defensively or offensively.

In the past I made allowances for his age and experience but he has played in over 80 games and he has not made the progress that perhaps many expected of him.

I will provide another example of socio-cultural values and
football.
After 1945 the North-East was the " hotbed of soccer" not only
at a professional level ( Newcastle and Sunderland) but also at
an amateur level ( Bishop Auckland and Crook Town ) Why was this ?
The players who played for these clubs at this time came from the
same impoverished working class backgrounds and generally held
the same values.
At Palace we now have a squad which is predominantly of an
Afro-Caribbean background. So the prevailing culture within the club is different as a consequence

I'd say the team is predominantly of African descent. Not a lot of Caribbean going on.

If you are suggesting that the squad all smoke ganja and hang out at blues parties on a Friday night then I suspect that is unlikely for modern Premier League players.

I think there is perhaps a certain mentality in a squad which develops when you have too many players from abroad who do not understand the culture and history of a particular club or competition and have a different mindset based on their upbringing. Maybe the balance at Palace needs to be adjusted a little.

His defending has got steadily worse over the last season. Ball watches and loses attackers way too easily. Also gets sucked into the middle and leaves the far post unmarked.

I personally think he needs replacing, but maybe he just needs better coaching.

Fully agree Willo loses his position far too easily, can be easily passed and is like a chicken with his head cut off when balls come in the box. Very overrated!

Exactly, I’ve never rated him, as all of my posts from since he made his debut will testify.

Nowhere near good enough defensively or offensively, if we want to progress.

I am a bit surprised by the reaction to this performance. Before the game it was 2 teams in mid to low table facing each other and it had a close game written all over it. In the first half there was not much in and Villa had the breaks with our disallowed goal and the own goal. In the second half Villa tried and were very successful in breaking up the game meaning we could not build up a head of steam. I think the stop start nature of the second half contributed to Doucoure's frustration and to his 2 yellow cards. Once we were down to 10 men we did actually stay in the game but it was always going to be difficult with a man less.
Agree with the set piece delivery from Olise needs to improve.
On positive side although i think we will struggle to get points against City and Arsenal we will have Doucoure rested for the Brighton game.

I would imagine pretty much every PL team of any standing will have their own Video performance guys to analyse upcoming opponents strengths & weaknesses to put together plans to break down the opposition defence, Mitchell is in that situation because he remains a work in progress, teams pile down his flank & overload him, he will need to learn to be better in those situations just as his team mates ( especially the more experienced ones) will have to learn to help him out / come to his rescue occasionally -
