To some this might sound as if we have an array of talent in the squad.
Who are these talented PL players ? - Mateta,Clyne,Ward,Schlupp,Hughes,Milivojevic,Riedewald,Tomkins,Ayew,Mitchell etc etc. Poor McArthur has been injured for quite a while and the likelihood is we will never see him in the shirt again.

Just reading that above list brings it home how poor our squad really is.

The last time we lost 4-0 was against Chelsea in October 2020.
We also lost 7-0 to Liverpool that season - a freak result if ever there was one!
There were a few other defeats with a 4 in them but we always at least scored in those.
Last night was our biggest thumping for some considerable time - a real worry.

A real worry will be after the next three games, with probability of three defeats.

I think the issue is we are a small club in finance terms and when we tried to go big with Sakho and Bentenke it left no money for other areas of the squad and those two left for free. This meant we spent many years under Hodgson with no money to invest in the squad which led to us having an old and depleted squad. Last summer we finally did a mini overhaul but it was not enough as we had very few players of any real value left. We do seem to be going in the right direction now.

Good post TL IMHO.

As I have alluded to earlier I think we did need to revamp the entire squad however that core of the first XI seems unfinished to me. Our best, starting team is incomplete and surely minus Wilf soon. This will only take cash and a lot of shrewdness to sort. We surely can’t afford another Benteke or Sakho situation.

I do feel as though we have moved in the right direction but, for me anyway, the fear is we have now halted in that progression, which looked so promising 18 months ago, and things may begin to look ominously precarious once more… if not already.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

4 of our next 6 PL games are against teams currently in the top 6.

Baffling that PV continues to play Ayew in a striking role when his scoring record is 5 in 95 games. As usual he fluffed his big chances last night. He also seems to have tunnel vision as he misses making the big passes, like when Olise was unmarked in front of goal but JA chose to shoot instead. Admittedly Lloris made a great save, but another foot or so to the left and JA would have scored.

Agree with the rest - we've managed the turnover of the squad really poorly, but we still have the 26th highest wage bill in Europe and it's more than double Brighton's...

Part of the reason for our poor squad management is the lack of value we've added to players. With the exception of Zaha, who'll leave for nothing, AWB and Bolasie are the only two players I can think of in recent years that have genuinely grown in value (and both buying clubs massively overpaid).

Guehi could be one, but he's regressed vs last season as has Mitchell. Neither Olise and Eze have noticeably kicked on...

I don't call it the Palace Gravy Train for nothing.

Spot on. We spent big, moved up a notch in terms of debt/out goings and got absolutely nothing for it. Sure you can say 'oh we survived' but, at what cost...

We need to be totally honest and readjust who we 'say' we are.

We need to be competing with the signings the promoted teams chase. We need to be prodding talent to then sell on. I don't mind us being a stepping stone. I am happy to watch exciting young players come through and mature with us. I never want us signing the likes of Benteke, Sakho, to an extent even Cabaye.

We get stones, we polish them up and sell diamonds.

It was obvious under Hodgson it was 'hold the line' whilst we recoup money, now it should be - let's unearth the local talent and get players playing.

I've fallen out of love with palace, that's on me.. no one else, but I don't connect with the club, yeah I see them on TV more, but it's not always enjoyable.

Where did we go wrong, selling FFS and thinking we were bigger than we were, largely down to Pardew.
