If anyone thinks Wilf had a poor game last night they need their head tested. He is turning into a different type of player under Viera. He knows he is not the main man anymore and it suits him. You can see that he really respects Viera and is playing for him. Under Roy he was playing for himself and a move away from Palace.

Wilf is still one of our best players and still a fantastic player.

There's certainly truth to what you're saying, but 'useful forward' feels a bit harsh - he's still our best outlet and most dangerous player in the majority of games, including last night.

I think your line about the old days is spot on; he's not as exciting and eye-catching as he used to be, but his output is considerably better;

Goals scored by wingers since the start of last season;

Salah - 40
Son - 26
Sterling - 20
Mane - 20
Wilf - 20

Barring Salah who is a freak of nature, he's up there with anyone in the country.

Those stats are much better than I realised, although I'm not sure they're quite right as Wilf got 11 goals last season and has 8 this season (19 total), while Mane got 11 last season and has 11 this season (22 total). Nonetheless, still fairly impressive, although only one assist this season and two last season is perhaps telling.

That has been the problem as Wilf tried to do it all on his own. HOWEVER, is the apparently new Wilf we saw on Wednesday going to try and remedy that omission? After all for all the talk of Salah being selfish, he not only tops the goals scored (by a distance) but shares top spot for assists with his teammate TAA with 10 (one ahead of the other full back). Come on Wilf, let's see you add some nice assists to your goals - you can do it. BTW Olise is our top assists man with 4.

You're right, Wilf should be 19.

Mane is now on 22 following his brace the other night, yes.

When you think about how many more goals and more chances Liverpool create as a team, I think it's pretty exceptional that Wilf has *almost* kept pace.

I'm not really a fan of assists as a metric - I've watched Wilf put so many chances on a plate for some of the forwards we've turned out over the years that do not get converted.

Chances created and big chances created are much better metrics of a players creative output. Wilf has 4 big chances created this season, which puts him in the top 50 in the division - only ~25 players have created more than 4 big chances this season, and those are mostly the usual suspects at the super clubs.

Good point actually, they're only assists if they are put away.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

And similarly you can roll a ball 3 yards to someone who scores a 30-yard screamer and you're credited with an assist.

Who gets the assist with pens, is it the person who is fouled OR the person who played the pass to instigate the foul? Reason i ask is, more often than not, the player who is fouled will take the pen.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Accordingly assists are meaningless, in my opinion.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

The way Wilf is coming back on strong, I wouldn't put it past him scoring a Patrick tomorrow against Burnley.

I don't think they credit winning a penalty or free kick that is then converted as an assist, so with a goal from a penalty, there is no assister stated.

What if you place the ball down on the spot but don't take the penalty?
