I have to say I find this signing, if not baffling, then at least difficult to understand. Mainz letting him go when they were in a relegation dogfight, and on such advantageous terms to us, was an alarm bell to begin with. He's been here for a year, and failed to convince either of his managers that he was good enough to be first choice, notwithstanding his inclusion in the team in the last couple of weeks. Hodgson and Vieira play very different football, yet by and large neither found much use for Mateta. Freedman and Parish can't have been blown away by Mateta either, or they wouldn't have extended Bentekes contract, bought Edouard and tried repeatedly to get Nketiah. Quite what has changed the minds of the manager, DoF and chairman now is unclear. I appreciate that we might have got him for a lesser fee than was originally agreed, but that itself speaks volumes for how he's played. Mostly though I'm confused about this signing because of what I've seen on the pitch. He's slow, clumsy and laboured. Hopefully he'll prove me entirely wrong with bells on! Agree. Can’t help thinking they thought we’d better do more in the window than just the lad from Derby for £1m & this was an easy win.

But $9 is probably about right for 3rd choice striker in today's market. I also hope he proves us wrong.

At least we seem to be following a plan now. Young potential. Two more this window.

Sometimes I think we underestimate the time it takes for some players to adjust to living in a new country, speaking a different language, playing with new team mates and in the toughest league in the world. I'm certainly guilty of that in retrospect. The fee we have paid for Mateta is a more realistic one. He's certainly made progress under PV - I'm sure French language has helped there - and maybe the security of a permanent deal will help him settle further. I'm still not convinced by him, but I'll be delighted to be proven wrong. If I remember right this happened with Ayew also. We were baffled at the 2.5m spent on him to turn the loan permanent, and his performances improved hugely. Let's hope the same happens here with Mateta.

I'd imagine once Wilf's back up to speed, it'll be back to Eduoard in the middle. And I'm just assuming soon enough PV will see how much more Big Ben offers us and Mateta will be restored to third choice. But I could be wrong there...time will tell.

Worth noting that Mateta is only 24 and is still learning and improving. Benteke is in his 30's and its fairly clear that his best days are behind him. You cant teach an old dog new tricks.

Yes, you're right it is worth noting that. Good point. I'm happy to have Mateta in the mix. I just don't think he's going to be pulling up any trees for us. Benteke was just coming to some great form again when he started a few games in a row...then suddenly he's benched again. Anyway, good to have options!

Having depth among our attackers is important, not just because of injury but because we'll likely lose players to AFCON every season. Oh, and if Mateta's overhead had gone in, perhaps we'd have had to pay 15 million.

I find it very hard to form an opinion on Mateta as he doesn't look like a professional footballer when he runs, but he does seem to have an instinct in and around the box. The closest successful player I could compare him to would be Paolo Wanchope [Link] who had a similar awkward running style but knew where the goal was. With the coaching staff and players he has around him he has every chance of improving and I really hope he does as he seems to love scoring. In today's market if it doesn't work out we'd probably get not far off our money back.
