Poverty and a lack of prospects seems an obvious start - whenever times get tough, austerity measures increased etc. you will see a stark increase in violent crime. (Brexit also made us poorer ) I think we can safely say poverty is a major driver of crime. Solving poverty though? It could be eased for sure, but not solved.

I think we can safely say poverty is a major driver of crime. Bangladesh, China, Nepal....all very poor. Average crime levels. Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit....relatively wealthy in World terms. Very violent. Fatherless kids fuels crime. Same as in Croydon. It's not a complex issue. It's bleeding obvious, anywhere beyond the hallowed corridors of the BBC. 'The Tories have given up on crime. Not just their policies but their philosophy has failed. For crime is quintessentially a problem the individual cannot tackle alone. Crime demands that communities work as communities to fight it. Labour’s commitment is to match popular concern with a constructive and broad-based programme of action'. 'For 14 years the tories have totally neglected crime'. January 1993 - Tony Blair Labour Shadow Home Secretary.

Perhaps we need to import more males to act as older brothers and fathers? A society awash with extra surplus men ? Sure, that would be great for the violent-crime statistics. Maybe it's already the causal link ? For London 2022 being more violent than London 1922 ?

We need to reform the police back to policing real crime and arm them too - oh, and have the death penalty option where the judge thinks it apporpriate. Edited by georgenorman (26 Apr 2022 11.32am)

There’s been stabbings at other stations and on trains. Man murdered on the Waterloo line some way out of London. Machete incident at south Croydon I think. Beckenham is still the ideal place live in this quarter of London, but lots of other places there is a risk and it’s spreading, unsurprisingly, like the behaviour at bus stops after school every day. Copycat culture and a lack of self control or decency.

I don’t believe communities can police communities, harsher penalties are what is required and giving the police the ability to do what they are supposed to ie protect the public.
