So another Transfer window comes and goes with the usual thrills for Palace fans. I thought we were interested in signing a young defender. We should be. The man Davies at Preston goes to...Liverpool, where he can sit on the bench.
Did our scouting network even know of his existence?
Just for fun, Liverpool then signs another CB. Riches to riches. Will the societal 'levelling up' ever extend to football?

I knew I was on to something.

Probably not BUT it would be interesting to see what would happen if the 'so-called Big 6' join a European Super League.

As for a young CB, I suspect our scouts are still sizing up Bella-Kotchap at Bochum and will make a move for him when and if satisfied he's a long term prospect. Unlike Liverpool and other big clubs (and even the likes of West Ham and Newcastle) we have to be careful with the pennies. The experience of Benteke and Sakho has possibly taught the board that expensive mistakes can set you back for several years. IMO Eze was the first youngster we brought in that we'd been stalking for a good period of time to be a long term signing and he looks like a gem in the making. Mateta may well be the second. I don't expect us to be making panic buys or knee-jerk reactions. I think the club may be adopting a 'get it right first time' approach, so that we buy players who will fit in successfully and hopefully only go up in value.

To be honest, I don't feel we will get anything from the Newcastle game.
They played with great verve against Everton and they will be hugely buoyed by the result, the clean sheet and the performance.

Newcastle are about as hit and miss as we are. To say they will be buoyed by the win and the clean sheet yet conveniently overlooking our own clean sheet and win is typical. I think we will win tomorrow and win comfortably.

Indeed.

How can a 25 year old Preston defender who is deemed good enough for Liverpool for only £2 million go under our radar when we’re crying out for youthful centre backs?! Same goes for the Turkish guy.

I’m sure Roy has a plan though

What's it got to do with Hodgson? It's Freedman and Parish who decide who is brought into the club. Hodgson may be told who were watching/stalking but I doubt he gets much of a say, if any as to whether or not a particular player should be bought.

As to our need for a CB. see my 10.13 post above for my opinion (and that's all it is) as to what might be happening.

With respect I also made reference to their performance against Everton which I understand was much improved on their showings this season. A 2-0 win at Everton is highly creditable.

A few clubs had been glancing in the direction of Ben Davies whom Mark Lawrenson called a "Steady Eddie".
He is of course a central defender but is left-footed and can play at left-back.
He has ability on the ball but whilst he is quick enough he is not a player blessed with searing pace.

I doubt whether our lack of purchases has anything to do with Roy

We've needed a striker who can score for the best part of three years (at least) so bringing in another player to potentially fill that void is promising. With the number of centrebacks on our books we would probably have needed to move at least one on in order to buy another, but with none of them seemingly capable of staying fit for more than two games at a time that went out the window.

I don't know anything about Ben Davies, but I did read one pundit who said he is perhaps more suited to a big club where the onus is on possession and control rather than backs to the wall defending. Given we definitely fall into the latter category maybe he wasn't a good fit anyway?

This is the first window where I had no expectations of anything happening, the club made no indication we would do anything, and we signed a striker who potentially could be a steal. Given the state of the market. our points tally and the number of players with contracts running down, it's not really surprising that the club have seemingly decided to wait until the summer before doing anything else.

It is not the right time to bring any defenders in at the moment, we are not going to be relegated, and with Ward, Clyne, Cahill, Sakho, Dann, PVA, Mitchell, Woods all out of contract i would expect our Back four to look completely different next season, hopefully Mitchell will sign a new contract, but he might be tempted buy another club, also lets hope Nathan Ferguson gets and stays fit, he can play anywhere along the back four

Surely that makes it exactly the right time to buy as there are suitable young defenders with other clubs whose contracts will also be running out in the summer which makes it cheaper to buy them now as once they are free agents everyone will be after then.

Upgrading our squad in summer is going to be hellishly expensive and if the board are skint now nothing much will have changed by summer
