With respect, I wasn't advocating that Sakho should not have got close to Salah to deny him space but he got so tight that Salah was able to use his strength and roll him.Speaking to a friend a few moments ago, he watched the game on TV and said that Gary Neville felt that Sakho got too tight and he knows a thing or two about defending ! I spoke to some people at half-time and at the end of the game, some thought it was a penalty, some thought they could see why it was given and I over-heard such a contrast of opinions as well.

I think Sakho gave Salah the opportunity to take a dive, and minimal contact these days is enough to invite that. I was just as disappointed with the decision against PVA shortly before that, and the free kick ultimately led to the penalty. I'm trying hard not to critisise the officials but my perception was the Oliver was itching to give that penalty.

I don't disagree that there was some contact and from Oliver's angle it may have appeared an obvious impediment of a player with the ball under control, but from my POV it was a poor decision and a clear dive. In fairness we benefited from one against Fulham which could easily have been a penalty. The red card I think was also questionable given Salah appeared to have lost control of the ball prior to contact so no goalscoring opportunity denied and then went over like an extra in Platoon, however in real time that's hard to call and I thought it was a Red from the Holmesdale (very far away I grant) at the time. I'd hope though that if it were contested a sensible observed would see that the contact didn't actually prevent a goalscoring opportunity and it wasn't dangerous or anything like that and so a yellow rather than a Red.

You should never be that tight in the area. This. We played a very good team and we made too many sloppy mistakes. Was one of those games where you realise why our best players play for us and not 'bigger' teams. Luka did a number of great things, then also gave the ball away cheaply. Andros had a great strike, but he also spent the first half mostly mis-controlling the ball. Even Wilf, who did lots of good things, was too careless in position. There was a moment in the first half he held off TAA brilliantly, and then fluffed the back heel to PVA. Wan Bissaka, Townsend, Schlupp, McArthur all had at least one moment where they got too carried away with the high press, and all of a sudden we were spead thin at the back. Going forward, whether it's Benteke, Wilf or Sorloth, we simply can't put the ball across the six yard box three times in a game like that with no getting on the end or gambling at the back post. Either the players crossing need to look up and cut the ball back, or we need to get more players in the box making the effort to get to those deliveries. That said, despite that we were bang in the game against a really good team and could easily have got a draw. We can improve, but still a lot of positives.
Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |

Having gone last night I thought they were clearly the better team, the pace at which they move the ball from side to side and the fact that they barely gave the ball away, even when under pressure. Despite that, we more than held our own & were unlucky to not score. I unfortunately missed the penalty incident, mainly due to the absolute shambles that was the bars and catering in the Arthur. Got there at 7:10, queued up for one of the bars that had adverts for food plastered all over it, took 15 minutes to get to the front of the queue and was told no food, try next door. Stood in that queue for 15 minutes and it didn't move so was so hungry I went up at 35 mins into the first half and they still ran out everything apart from bloomin sausage rolls. Anyway, back to the footy. Benteke just has no confidence whatsoever, that shot that pretty much ended up in the changing rooms, well you had to laugh to stop yourself from crying. We've clearly tried to stop the hoof ball, we don't play with out and out wingers so we're not exactly floating loads of crosses in. It would make sense to me to have Ayew up top with Wilf as he'll chase everything and adds some pace. Sorloth is like a steam train, just sort of chugs around at a slow pace and struggles with any kind of acceleration. Still, thought we played very well and no shame in that defeat. AWB was incredible, in spite of the red card.

Very obvious that he just couldnt wait to give it, never gave himself a couple of seconds to think about it, just whistle in his gob as soon as Salah the Cheating Egyptian got the ball then instantly pointed to the spot....just as he wold have if it had been Wilf being tackled by Milner..NOT!!!! Worry not though, because mr oliver will be forensically assessed and patted on the head, told 'well done michael, the correct team won so have a gold star!!'

But it is part of the modern game so deal with it, it all evens out in the end. I'm just a little sick of every penalty we get, being a dyed in the wool bang on penalty and every time our oppos get one they are cheats. Just man up, don't worry about the nasty evil pundits, they can't hurt you, I promise, they don't actually affect the game, it's not worth crying over them (and if that sounds a bit patronising, don't act like babies, grow up) Edited by boo909 (21 Aug 2018 1.24am) I think you speak for many of us. Well said.

That pen just sums up what is wrong with modern game. Roy was not pleased at all and when he comes out not happy like that you know something is not right I dont think he has ever attacked a ref before. I hope palace appeal that red card I suppose what did we expect these big teams are cheats they have done it for years this is why they dont want var
