IMO Parish’s only real mistakes have arisen from trying to make us something we’re not on a couple of occasions and having too much ambition rather than too little. We’ve made a good recovery from such a poor start but there’s the top six and a fag paper between the rest. It’s not his fault we sh1t ourselves in front of goal irrespective of broader squad issues. Agreed Rachid

Huh? So not firing Pardew soon enough (by several months) allowing all confidence to erode and players like Puncheon and Dann suffer majorly form wise was down to having too much ambition? Not signing a goalkeeper thus leaving us with 1 fit keeper (as Jules immediately got injured) is down to too much ambition? Not signing a striker last time around leaving us with 1 fit striker (who immediately got injured) was down to too much ambition? Not properly addressing glaring squad depth issues like left back before Souare went down was down to too much ambition? Not firing Holloway sooner....hiring Neil Warnock (wtf)....down to too much ambition? Nah mate, these errors are down to Parish being a weak chairman in the context of other men in this league. Very, very poor chairman with poor judgement and poor planning skills. Only someone with a bizarre sense of judgement would laud themselves for signing a goalkeeper 6 months from now, when we desperately need one now.

Please name another club in this entire division that is weaker than us depth wise in these critical areas. Thats down to the chairman not getting transfers completed.

People keep moaning about our squad depth and yet we have 10 players injured and are still fielding a decent side and competing. ..not sure his many other teams, even top one who could cope with 10 injured players.

People who keep banging in about this being our longest spell in the top flight in our history miss the point of threads like this completely. It’s been nothing but scraping survival at all costs. Now, I completely understand that approach in the first few years, but the reason so many of us harp on about progression isn’t because we’re getting too big for our boots, it’s because if we go down we will literally have nothing to show for the 5 years we’ve been here. We’ve come nowhere as a club. The problem with parish is every decision he makes is based on appeasing people short term & hoping he can get a tv appearance portrayed as a footballing guru, but he’s not even very good at achieving that. He normally gets about 3 weeks work a season because the rest of the time he’s back to desperately pulling off some great escape again. Our priorities are completely wrong, and it’s utterly pointless not to target progression with the amount of money you take in as a premier league club. Unless something changes, we’re goinf down anyway. Going down isn’t the worrying part, what worries me more is going down, having not progressed the footballing culture at the club at all meaning that coming back up quickly will be extremely difficult. Being in the premier league for 5 years is great, but we will hugely regret being so short sighted & failing to capitalise on what is a once in a history opportunity. This could also be seen as having faith in your team/management team to turn us around, and actually attempting to have some Stabilty at The club - something that we have not had for a while at That point (or since!) Not signing a striker last time around leaving us with 1 fit striker (who immediately got injured) was down to too much ambition? Not properly addressing glaring squad depth issues like left back before Souare went down was down to too much ambition? Not his job..The Manager needs to address those glaring squad depth issues, then work with SP to get suitable candidates in. If The Manager says he has enough cover, it's his call. We do not know what the Managers have asked parish to provide. Quote
Not firing Holloway sooner....hiring Neil Warnock (wtf)....down to too much ambition? Different scenario, we'd just arrived in The PL. Holloway had gotten us here. How many Times have we been astonished when a manager was not given the opportunity. Quote

The only Thing that I can see can be levelled at SP is that he tends to tryget players on the cheap - i.e. trying to shave a few mill or doing some crazy buy now pay later deal, and ending up losing them. but this is most likley down to FFP. After all, we have splased the cash before, on CB and Mama (two that spring To mind).. neither have been an overwhelming success considering the cash spent. He's at least trying to learn from his mistakes.

You can pick holes but SP has generally done a superb job - he has his faults re dawdling with transfers and going for proven quality manager or player wise rather than talent that's on the up, but his reign has been a success - no question. But there does not seem to be a model - it's fire fighting with a bit more conviction thanks to the American money, and the stadium plan to grow us as a club. There are no youth players coming through and a squad with no depth - that needs to be addressed because we can't rely forever on managerial changes and expensive transfer windows to keep us up - we are not bringing players through, be they our own or other clubs' youngsters - maybe the three we got this Jan will be more the types of buys we'll be getting in future.

Edited by Mstrobez (15 Feb 2018 10.02am) How well up on Palace history are you? It can’t be overlooked what we have achieved by staying up this long. Not even for your arguments sake.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain even a mid-table position. Southampton, Stoke, West Brom were all sides who looked established in the mid-table and are now struggling. So unless we have buckets of money so make a play for the top 6 then I guess we will always be fighting relegation. This season has not been the best for Steve Parish he's made some blunders but I still believe he is the best man for the job. If we stay up he needs to learn lesson, that worries me as I'm not sure he's great at that.
The ups and downs of Palace have left me older than my years |

Not being privvy to Steve's thought processes makes it difficult to form an opinion. The numerous Managers may have stories they'd like to tell. just hope steve has a plan

And he’s pretty tidy at pulling things off on the business side with minimal fuss. He’s pulled in investment and sponsorship deals without anyone knowing about them until they have been completed.
