There are two distinct groups of people: "Gypsys/Roma" and "Travellers", who tend to get mixed up,though in recent years here there has been quite a lot of inter marriage. "Gypsy" became widely used in Europe, often in a derogatory way, to describe Roma people.Roma, which in the Romani language means "people", originate from northern India. The root of the Romani language is ancient Punjabi, or Hindi. The words Roma and Romani have nothing to do with the country Romania in which the Roma are called Tsigani (Gypsy). They are very much a distinct ethnic/racial group. They have faced great prejudice in Europe (particularly,Central,Southern and Eastern Europe),for centuries, and were singled out by the Nazis as one of the ethnic/racial groups to be slaughtered in the Holocaust for being "sub beings".They still face widespread discrimination and prejudice in many countries today. One theory of the origin of "pikey" it that it comes from "turnpike", the place where itinerant travellers and thieves would camp near a settlement. So,a derogatory origin but not a racial/ethnic one.But one which grew to describe Roma and Travellers particularly, and with a very negative connotation. Edited by legaleagle (18 Mar 2015 9.54am) There are three groups actually... you're forgetting the travelling showmen (Fairs, Circuses etc)

I don't see how Pikey can be claimed to be racist. How are Travellers a race? They come from all over the place, it's kind of in their nature.
Don't think it protects Pikeys. Surely it protects Gypsies and possibly Travellers. And that is indeed what the BBC has decided.

Not from a bygone era ...unfortunately, it still happens!!!! Recently had a group in the area. A garden centre and a supermarket had to call out the rozzers to deal with "pikeys" (i.e. gangs of thieves) helping themselves to their goods with absolutely no intention of paying. In the end, local businesses refused to let them on their premises.

Whatever a person's heritage, I still don't understand how being decended from people who moved around, wherever they came from but now living in a house or static caravan is an actual thing, any more than being from a council estate would warrant me being classified a Chav, capital C. Although the English who embrace their roots i.e. haven't bothered to work themselves out of poverty are also granted special priveledges, just without any recourse for the negative labels they've be given. I'll remember that in future TUX; my opinion may be less valid in your eyes if I didn't (I think) post at all on a thread in palace talk with a theme with some overlap one or two weeks earlier.I don't even need to have expressed a contrary opinion for you to have a pop.Love and peace;chill out. Where's the contradiction? Mile fairly promptly had disciplinary action taken against him,by both his employer and his area of work's governing body.He could be said to be a role model with a public profile.Don't remember too many posting there saying that if it was deliberate,it didn't merit disciplinary action, though to be fair you thought he should be punished but hoped he wouldn't be.I thought he should be punished too. Some thought (I think) he shouldn't be because other similar incidents hadn't been. It is important a given employer or work area body don't treat different people differently. In the BBC's case they introduced a new "bullying behaviour" code following the Saville revelations and will likely have dissatisfaction amongst staff if Clarkson is now treated differently to how a regular BBC person already on a "final warning" would be. Edited by legaleagle (18 Mar 2015 12.13am) The ''contradiction'' is that you, in your own words, are against ANY such instances in 'the workplace' but now you look to other opinions but more specifically the actions of the relevant authorities to bolster your stance. Oh dear.

I could reply and knock your "logic" out the window since IMHO you have become overly focused on just seeking point scoring against me rather than logical argument. But,I'm very happy to let you have the last word about me,Jeremy and Mile since its getting very very boring, not a little silly and I'm not going to bite Edited by legaleagle (18 Mar 2015 7.56pm)

Despite the furore surrounding his suspension from Top Gear, it seems Jeremy Clarkson isn't done with the BBC just yet. He's just been booked as a guest host on topical panel show Have I Got News For You. The broadcaster is due to present the third episode in the satirical show's new season, which commences in April. However, Jim Mulville, managing director of production company Hat Trick, will be meeting with the BBC to find out whether the recently launched investigation into Clarkson's 'fracas' with producer Oisin Tymon, will prevent him from taking the hot seat, alongside Ian Hislop and Paul Merton. "I don't think the BBC know that he is due to be on," Mulville told The Independent. "It would be great. Have I Got News For You tries to have a bit of mischief so we will see if he can come on." Clarkson's has been a regular face on Have I Got News For You since Angus Deayton's resignation in 2002. He once famously disrupted proceedings by throwing a pen at Ian Hislop, leaving him with a cut to his face. "We had to stop recording," said Hislop. "He refused to believe it was blood. He said it was red biro and then apologised to me afterwards." Bosses at the BBC are yet to reach a decision on whether Clarkson still has a future with the corporation. However, Driving.co.uk reports that the BBC plans to air the remainder of the current season regardless of the outcome of the investigation. Last Sunday, the BBC lost nearly four million viewers due to Top Gear being taken off the air and replaced with a repeat of Red Arrows: Inside the Bubble. It just goes on & on
