There are politicians who lie every time they open their mouth, because they only say what is in their own interest to say.

There are politicians who need to lie to preserve state secrets.

There are politicians who make genuine mistakes. Then correct them.

There are politicians who stretch the truth in order to encourage reluctant people to take actions that are judged to be in the public interest.

Which type do you believe was involved here?

So now it's necessary to decide the rationale behind the lies to determine how trustworthy politicians are going forward.

It certainly is!

Not every lie is told with malice. Every one one of us lies sometimes to protect people from the truth. Especially children.

Politicians will sometimes need to lie to protect state secrets or mislead an enemy.

Reassuring a frightened populace that the steps being taken will protect them, in order to achieve calm and discipline, can be seen as a lie with good intentions. If indeed it was a lie at all and not just an example of misspeaking, later corrected.

I'd rather elected representatives were honest. In any case Trump gets none of this qualifying.

So would we all, along with everyone else.

Sometimes though it’s necessary to be less than 100% honest in order to get the job done. That it’s regrettable doesn’t mean it’s unnecessary.

What a great derivative of the several versions of that oft quoted/misquoted statement. Other versions include - ‘Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth’.

Even better - it’s also demonstrative of the concept as well… that line is often attributed to Goebbels, not Hitler, and even then there’s no evidence that he ever said it. Probably explains why it’s never used consistently.

Hitler does however cover it in relation to the Jewish people in Mein Kampf rather than it being some sort of sagely sound bite.

Fantastic example within an example of misinformation.

That explains Trump's rhetoric. It was necessary.

It's a sliding scale though isn't it. I'm not sure how far is too far but he certainly tested the limits and went over them more times than most other politicians.

Trump has been lied about, far more than he lied.

Also, no new wars and a decent economy.

You didn't see him divide the world with strengthening BRICS. Biden can't pick up the phone to very important people and that's a disaster.

The Democrats are incompetent and insane.

Absolutely. I don't understand the premise whereby some politicians' lies and evasions are readily accepted and excused while others' are castigated. Divining motives is so subjective in the case of well known politicians and impossible when they're trying to get elected.
