I must add he was a brilliant teacher.

As you probably know both Hitchen brothers are former Trotskyists....Trotsky was a complicated man, brilliant and terrible.

Thankfully the Hitchen brothers learnt from seeing the actual results of communism....what looks good on the page can end with results very different when under human hands.

Many such cases.

I think, 'is this an appropriate use of license fee funds' is a relevant question. As I don't pay it, it's for others to answer.

How is that going? How often to the BBC hassle you?

I know that people who are legally not liable to pay the licence still get grief from the beeb on a regular basis under the old "just checking that your circumstances haven't changed excuse"

I get the occasional letter, where they try to give the impression....without saying it....that you're breaking a law and that they are the enforcement...They try to give an official impression when they are just a third party company that the Beeb hire.

It's extremely dishonest and designed to scare you. Considering many people receiving it will be old people who perhaps don't have all their original marbles it really comes across as despicable....going without heating or eating to pay Gary Lineker is nothing short of its own crime.

I've had two visits in a couple of years. I never let them in (they will ask) but you should never let them. I tell them I watch no live broadcasts, which is true and tell them thank you and goodbye.

I recommend this channel for anyone who is thinking of ending this political tax but is concerned and doesn't know how to deal with it.

It's a cause célèbre.

Personally I think it's instinctive. Whatever you are against, they are for.

It reminds me of when Trump first touted the US vaccine....all the leading US Democrats said they didn't trust it because 'Trump'.

As soon as Trump was out of the way.....suddenly they were all for the vaccines.

For the record, I believe Begum should be allowed back into the country. She was a child when she left and as such, should be given a second chance. Been over the arguments before and suspect I am not changing any minds on here but then again, neither are those who think I am wrong. We can agree to disagree.

But this podcast? Nah. Just Soc.lib passive-aggressive behaviour. The BBC as an institution would fly this girl back as an honoured guest and happily have her in some f***ed celebrity x-factor jive on an Island reality show BS in a heartbeat. All I ever ask is some honesty about it rather than us having to stump up to pay for a podcast that is going to be nothing more than a publicly funded plea for her return.

I'm surprised she isn't on Desert Island discs on Christmas Day or Thought for the day.

How do you justify this claim?

That you disagree with the views you perceive are portrayed on the BBC doesn’t give you the right to make such a declaration.

It’s not a tax! The licence fee is to support the provision of all live broadcasting in the UK. Opting out means others, many of whom depend on it, including those who are old that you feign sympathy for, must pay more. Should your approach become more widespread then either the quality changes or the method of funding must. Neither of which is what I, or I believe most people, want.

Do you never watch anything on iPlayer either?

So if you are unwilling to change your approach I wish the BBC much success in their efforts. If that means giving them enhanced regulatory powers then let that happen.

All but the poorest ought all share the cost of providing a public service that is so valuable and free of government interference. Having debates over balance is a separate issue.
