Well, there certainly do seem to be a lot of people on the left who seem to think that it's in everyone's interest to move towards a form of social credit score.....based entirely upon their own beliefs of course.....very authoritarian and very CPP. Perhaps we lost, but we never even fought.

Surely the reason for the way people respond to Trump (which is not "visceral hatred at all, but completely rational dislike mixed with both fear and sadness) is because the USA has been the beacon of democracy and it's President the leader of the western world. We live in an imperfect world. One in which we held the USA up as a model to those who continued to be ruled by dictators. To see at least a substantial minority support someone who has more in common with some of those dictators than the many great past Presidents is both disturbing and worrying.

Perhaps we lost, but we never even fought. That's true in many senses. The old 'boil the frog' strategy.

I don't agree with you on control over content....unless it's the old yelling 'fire' in a crowd and those limited restrictions like death threats. However, I do share your concerns to an extent...but view that as a necessary negative...a lesser evil. I contend that all speech should be subject to criticism regardless of its content as no one holds an objective truth or 'correct' anything....they only have worldviews.
It's certainly a necessary evil but least worse options often are. Just subjecting things to criticism is great in theory but, as we are witnessing, not really that useful in practice. There is no argument over the right of everyone to hold their own worldview but ultimately, if democracy is going to survive, the majority worldview has to be followed. If people are going to promote opinions which threaten that fundamental rock upon which our democracy is built then they might not simply need to be challenged but restrained. That applies to both extremes on the left and right. Refusing to accept the result of an election and encouraging your supporters to believe you, rather than the officials responsible, is tantamount to calling for a revolution. No democracy can tolerate that.

As a matter of interest which dictators do you think Trump has more in common with? Personally I think this statement takes your hatred of Trump to a whole new level
