The timing on all this is going to be very interesting. Generally, Parliament breaks for the summer recess about the third week in July and re-convenes first or second week in October, after Conference. If they stick to this pattern, with May going on 7th June, there is very little time to settle the Leadership, form a new Cabinet, define any new strategy/policy and get that in place before the summer break and Conference. After Conference, there is very little time, only a couple of week in fact, left before the extension to Article 50 expires (on 31st October). No time at all really to get anything sorted in Parliament. Will the whole of Parliament give up their Summer vacation to sort things out? I won't hold my breath! Will the EU give us a further extension to A50? Some of the noises reportedly coming from Macron and others would seem to imply that they are not keen - Macron has already stated once that he will veto any extension. Interesting times, eh? Unless the Parliament votes for a deal then a 'no deal' is the de facto result. If Johnson doesn't like the way things are going perhaps he will call that general election. I don't know.....I guess we are all going to see....like I say, get the popcorn in. True but if Parliament pass a vote of no confidence, which I think is pretty certain if the deadline approaches without a deal agreed, and no one else can form a government, which also seems pretty certain then an election will have to take place whether the PM calls it or not. I would then expect the outgoing Parliament to revoke Article 50 so that the new Parliament can make their own decision. That seems to me the most likely scenario for the coming months. It will not surprise me to begin to soon begin to hear whispers of regret that Mrs May's/EU deal wasn't accepted.

May's deal was reported to be worse than remaining. That's why no leaver can seriously support it.....and those that did only under the understanding that it would change later. I can't see parliament revoking article fifty unless there was a second referendum that supported staying. None of us know what is going to happen of course.....Johnson is only the favourite and the Tories are known for choosing leaders who aren't in line with their grass roots.....as we have had two remainers in a row.....in fact perhaps Duncan Smith is the last Tory leader who was actually a real EU skeptic.

Edited by Stirlingsays (24 May 2019 11.31pm) For once I tend to agree with you, although whether it will have to completely break up first or undergo internal reform is an open question. 30 years ago my daughter did her dissertation on the tensions caused by the effects of a "two speed Europe". As I was working at the time for a German company these were also being discussed there. The effects were well understood but the desire to keep everyone under the same umbrella meant they were considered secondary. My own hope is that the reform route is taken and that some kind of overarching pan-European organisation continues to link everyone. I would like the UK to be driving that reform rather than turning it's back on it because we can then help to shape it and not have to accept what others decide. So even if our future EU membership has to be especially tailored to fit us I would rather we stayed inside than outside with a "deal". Maybe we will move towards that in the next 2 years with us revoking Article 50, calling a GE and electing a Parliament with no outright winner which demands compromise to move forward. With the EU negotiating team also changing and disaffection growing in various countries perhaps the opportunity for a fresh approach may arrive sooner than later. I really hope so and that the divisiveness of the past years can be put behind us as we endeavour to build a safe future for those who follow us.

The grass roots never got to vote in the last leadership contest as Andrea Leadsom pulled out leaving Theresa May as leader of the party.
