Not sure...but can't believe that he's suddenly just become a bad player. But I very much agree he needs to start banging them in soon. I think there might have been an injury after his first season with us too? There are certainly some mental issues, which could theoretically be resolved, but after 2 full seasons of nothing (61 appearances, 4 goals), I've given up hope.

Yes, I think most fans heart sink when they see him take the field, Seriously though, I wonder if he needs Phycological help to regain some confidence
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

Think Sheffield United is a massive game for Benteke. If he could get a goal and result there it may set him up for the season. If he does not score, which is more likely than unlikely, in the next 2-4 games we could be in for a repeat season.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Jonathan Trott’s description of how his cricket career unravelled through anxiety problems sounded similar to what he seems to be going through.

No doubt unpopular for me to say so - but I think he plays some brilliant balls perfectly weighted through for team mates - two clear goal scoring passes which were only thwarted by an excellent Pickford performance.

But a big part has also been a lack of delivery. I can hardly remember a cross going into the box against Everton. The only attempt that sticks in my mind was when Andros launched one in that the wind to hold of and it sailed about 20m above Bentekes head. The question is would we be better off changing our style to suit his strengths or play a style that suits other players strengths (counter attack) but diminish our strikers best attributes. I believe we are currently trying to do a bit of both but not doing either so well which is why we usually appear pretty disjointed in attack. The increased playing time of Meyer and addition of Camarasa should at least start to improve quality and quantity of crosses into the box this season. Once this happens we will really be able to judge whether he'll turn things around after a run off games.

I actually thought he had a decent game yesterday but it means nothing if he is not scoring. We can blame the lack of crosses to him but when you watch him his movement is non existent. He always seems to hide behind the back post when someone hits the byline. Look at Billy Sharp the weekend, He was in the right place to shin the ball over the line. Benteke is never in the right place or his goal tally would be no where near as dismal. I posted on a different thread that he had 1 touch in Evertons box over 80 minutes, where as Zaha had 8 in 25 minutes. Edited by EddieMac (12 Aug 2019 9.30am)

Edited by EddieMac (12 Aug 2019 9.30am) I would agree with the Billy Sharp analogy...but we dont play that way...how many time do we put the ball across the penalty box from the wings??? If we did, then i'd agree that we need a fox in the box...but we dont we almost always go wide and then come back in to attack centrally. I agree that Big Ben is pretty much done now, but I would also say that saturday was perhaps his best all round performance for a season and a half..he won the ball back many many more times than I've seen him do before....so on that basis he at least seems to be fit...

This is the worry, we just are not going to put the ball in the net anywhere near enough (again). Benteke is finished in front of goal. Hes just an faint memory of the player who scored that lovely touch and dink at Stamford bridge. We are relying on Ayew, who doesnt score and Wilf who is NOT a striker. Not sure he can be relied about to get 10 again let alone 10-15. I'm very concerned about how this is going to pan out this season. A few more scoreless games at home and the atmosphere is going to turn for the worse again at selhurst. I think we are going to be ok at the back and midfield but we are going to have little to show for it as we have no real number 9 with that ruthless streak.

I agree completely about his perfomrmance on Saturday, he chased back and won a few balls and looked a lot more comfortable on the ball which is positive. To me he just looks too nice, he should be demanding the ball and pushing players around to get to it. Maybe Sunday will be the day our suffering ends, I would be over the moon for him to score a couple.
