There are rumours that Mateta is leaving, probably to a Turkish club. I'm sure that I recall a time a few years ago when all the strikers left except Benteke and we all had our fingers tightly crossed that he didn't get injured

Yes and Parish came up with a quote along the lines of 'tomorrow the sun may not come up', when it was pointed out what happened if that sole striker got injured. Within a couple of games Benteke was injured and out for awhile. If we are going in to the second half of the season with one striker, one left back and only two fit for purpose central midfielders it does point at there being something wrong at the club. Our subs bench and strength in depth is the worst its been for a few seasons. Originally posted by Midlands Eagle

I would honestly rather sign no one than some of the cabbages we are getting linked to. I can remember very well the carry on here last year when we didn’t sign Adam Armstrong from Blackburn and look how that has turned out for them. I know it’s a always a gamble singing any player but when we have our small budget we have to be extra careful. No one wants to end up with a team like Everton who signed players for the sake of it. I would be happy if we could just get a decent centre mid in on loan till end of season if that meant we could get some decent stock in the summer. I don’t believe we are in any danger of getting relegated even with no signings at all. Edited by EddieMac (26 Jan 2023 9.46pm)

Ahamada and Semonyo, would fit in with our plan to purchase players with sell on values, the only fear i have is i dont see our players improving, the opposite actually, my opinion

Whilst I agree with you Lanzo, how much faith do you have that the board will be able to get 7-8 players in during the summer window? Its our failing in the last summer that has caused our squad to be so imbalanced. Personally I thought those issues would be addressed this window. They are not. If you add in that McArthur probably won't play, Mateta may go and Ebiowei is out on loan, the second half of the season will be even more threadbare that the first half. In the summer I reckon we will need to replace Luka, Riedeweld, Zaha, McArthur at least one of Clyne/Ward, possibly Tomkins. Add needing at least one (possibly two if Mateta is off) strikers and another left back. There is no way we will do all that in one window the way we dither and leave it late. If we don't go down this year (and probably won't) then I would imagine we go into next season as prime candidates. I don't want us to buy rubbish now, but failure to get anyone in or relying on loans is just kicking the can down the road. Surely it is better to get a couple in now, to ease the pressure on this season and mean there is less to do next summer? Personally, I think there is something wrong at board level, because leaving the squad so thin, is not exactly great planning. Originally posted by Lanzo-Ad

Looks like I could have been right about us signing Jaquinto Merde.

Our squad is painfully thin and we also have players out of form and injured. It’s not a great combination.

Looking at the list of January buys over the last few years shows: Adebayor Also PVA, Schlupp and Soare about whom opinions are mixed. A few youngsters who may or may not work out. And Luka who's just about finished.
