He had 4 wives. This was the one he had in Moscow, which might explain things. He was certainly disillusioned with the treatment he got in Moscow, but I don't think he ever expected to have to live there. He was never an enthusiastic supporter of socialism, let alone communism. He thought helping the Soviets would help change things in the UK, where he thought change was needed. He was an Anglophile at heart. In the world in which he operated, he did and said many contradictory things. He was helping to fight communists at one point. Only one thing is certain. He was a traitor. What misled me was where she said “he devoted his whole life to communism”.

Usual nonsense from you. His own father and at least one of his wives confirmed his dedication to communism and of course his actions speak louder than words. To say he had no socialistic beliefs and was closer to fascism to drivel - but we are used to it from you. He had an educated, and privileged background and certainly flirted with communism whilst at Cambridge. That's though hardly unusual. That some suggest he was a dedicated communist from that time forward is to forget he was both a spy and a journalist, so knew how to appear to be something, when he wasn't and then write convincingly about it. I think he was a complicated and very confused man who thought he was helping his own country by helping another. Some of the things he said and did during his life were strongly anti-communist, even neo-fascist. Who knows what he really believed in? I doubt he did himself. He got himself onto a slippery slope and slid to its final destination when his treachery was revealed. He didn't much like that final destination, but had no choice than to stick to the script by then. He missed the UK but could never come back. His father, St John Filby, was a prominent member of the British Union of Fascists, and supporter of Oswald Mosley. So Kim was certainly close to fascism in his early life.

Do you trust Putin's denial over any involvement in the events in Salisbury in 2018 and that his political opponents are all locked up because they are criminals, or suffer poisoning on aircraft by accident? She would say that, wouldn't she? She wants her pension.

Your need to gainsay everything probably needs psychiatric analysis.

Of course. Not though that he was telling the truth in the video. Consider both the context and the audience, and perhaps think "he would say that then to them, wouldn't he". He was a spy!

If you believe that, then I suppose you also think Putin tolerates criticism from opponents. Putin wants the Russian people to believe in him and his version of events. That includes how he views the communist period and his role in it. No-one speaks freely in Russia without any concern for the consequences, so usually say what people want to hear. I have no special interest in this. Philby was a spy whose true beliefs and motivations probably went to the grave with him, if ever they really existed. Everything else is either speculation, or others covering themselves.
