This sums up our chronic position today. We have been held together by some individual players over the past few seasons. Gallagher and then Doucoure of recent note. Eze had a brief period showing top form, but sadly injury has pulled him back again. Edited by dreamwaverider (28 Dec 2023 5.34am)

Roy said after the game that we lost to one of the best teams in the world . This is just trying to pull the wool over the fans’ eyes. In reality that was the weakest Chelsea team we have faced in years, and I doubt we will face a weaker Chelsea team for some time. On the other hand we had our arguably our strongest team out other than Doucoure and possibly Edouard and Ward. It was a patchy performance by us with some good spells, but we looked shaky at the back and I think we can finally dispel the myth that Hodgson is some kind of supreme defensive coach. On the positive front Mateta continues to impress and I thought Clyne had another decent game. He’s faced some difficult opponents in recent weeks and hasn’t been found wanting. In the bigger picture I think Sheffield United and Burnley are doomed , but the third place looks up for grabs.

Let's say we were unlucky not to share the points yesterday. But it is unacceptable to make your first substitution in the 81st minute and the second (the Brazilian talent who cost 25.000.000) in the 90th. During the metaBournemouth era, during which we havent been playing badly it is clear that we need a right back and a strong midfielder who can a.tackle and keep the ball b.pass. Which is quite difficult under the existing circumstances (availability, money you have decided to pay, how determined is a top class player to come to a club with relegation problems looming ahead). So let us hope that money policy may change during the January window.

On the face of it you would think it was a close game, but really Chelsea should have had another couple given they had two (or was it three?) one on one situations with Henderson, one of which my dead granny could have scored. Roy raged about VAR, but it was VAR that cancelled out Jackson's earlier goal, so it balanced out and it was a penalty in my eyes (albeit an unlucky one). Chelsea were a bit headless but we never really managed to take advantage of that and as painful as it is to say the result does mirror the game in my view. What was clear was that neither team had control of the game, which seemed to stem from two disappointing midfields. Ebs is not fit. Richards was great at breaking up play but is not a midfielder and Lerma had an unusually out of sorts game. For some reason Roy did not attempt to address this and he did have Hughes, Ahamada and Ozoh on the bench, so he had options. Olise once again shone. JPM again worked tirelessly and was really good. Clyne and Mitchell had good games. Richards worked hard to break up play. Andersen and Lerma had games they'll want to forget. Ayew got an assist but I didn't think he did enough and looked lost when he reached the 18-yard box (that happened with other players too). Do they know what they're supposed to be doing when they get there? We have to win against Brentford or at least earn a strong draw. Defeat in that game and it is hard to see where the excuses would be for Roy.

Edited by The Dolphin (28 Dec 2023 7.30am) Needless loss when we could so easily have got something from the game. Not sure what the little 'fracas' between Roy and the officials was about at the end but once again, his substitutions were ill timed. What further evidence is required for the need to reinforce the team next month?

I am of the opinion that a draw against a Brentford team out of form and now without Mbeumo will not be enough to placate our supporters who have been starved of home wins. A defeat and Mr Hodgson and the Board will face shot and shell with the atmosphere leading up to the final whistle becoming toxic. PS : Since posting the above, I have had messages which basically were asking "Will Mr Hodgson still be in situ for the Brentford game ?" Edited by Willo (28 Dec 2023 8.35am)

Is it my imagination, or did I see a high boot on Andersen which should’ve been given as a foul, immediately before the Eze tackle which gave away the penalty? Roy Hodgson looked decidedly unwell last night. I wonder if ill health may lead to his resignation?

I did not understand why the players , management or pundits did not pick up that Anderson was fouled literally a second before the penalty was given, a Chelsea player tried an overhead kick which ended up kicking Andersons chest as he headed the corner clear . I think the ref saw it but didnt give it and that was the reason he didnt give the blatant penalty as he was trying to even out his original mistake

I thought we started with a flourish and, knowing this was a poor Chelsea side, reckoned we might get something from the game. But, a very tired tackle by Eze just before the final whistle, led to a VAR penalty and another point was lost. It could, should even, have been 3 points on the board. The Chelsea we played last night were anything but a star spangled side and it was a frustrating result. I've been a big supporter of Roy and his ability to carve out unlikely points, but he is back to the 'first era' tactics when we all became irritated with his distinct lack of substitutions. Surely, as others have already written, he could have used some of the energetic, young talent from the bench sooner to shake things up a bit. His usual reasoning that it would disrupt our game begins to sound a tad hollow. We not only needed fresh legs last night, but also fresh management tactics. The Brentford game is now a must win or else. Some huge decisions need to be taken at a senior level if we are to retain our place at the top table.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
