They're mired in s*** for cheating the salary cap (and getting caught), burdened with massive fines, a limit on the number of players they can bring in, and all kinds of other penalties. Basically, for the next two years they're going to be able to do very little but play the kids.

I have to say, I really don't get the Benteke hatred. The guy is serviceable, he scores a few goals, he plays with a smile on his face, he's clearly a net plus in the dressing room, and given that we don't really play to his strengths, he never complains. It seems some are stuck expecting him to return to the player of the Villa years, or have silly expectations because he came from Liverpool. It's somewhat similar with Ayew, another player who gets a ton of stick on here yet for me is consistently one of our better performers and who never fails to do what it says on the tin. Sometimes I wonder about some of our supporters. Yes, every fan loves the flair players and Zaha, Gallagher, and their like will always win the hearts and minds first but the negative comments about Benteke and Ayew (among others) really rankle with me. A SQUAD is the sum of its parts; it takes all sorts to build a strong one; some stars, some leaders, some role players. In the latter category, Benteke and Ayew in particular deserve far more respect because they're by and large very good at the roles they're asked to play.

Except for their most important role which is scoring goals.

Ah Sydtheeagle, I find your posts eminently well reasoned, and accurate in their assumptions. Not this one though, it's as off target as a wayward Benteke missed sitter. Massive fan of Ayew and what he gives us. And even those who kill him for his lack of goals cant fault his workrate and overall contribution. Benteke on the other hand, never really feels like he's at the races, never giving it 100%. That doesnt mean that he doesnt contribute, because he does....a bit. But it just irks fans when it always feels like you are playing with 10 men. All of that would be ignored if he scored his chances, but he doesn't really do that either. IMO the only real difference between the Villa Benteke and the Benteke we have now is desire.

Edited by southnorwoodhill (20 Jan 2022 8.41pm) In the main, fair enough comments though my comparison of Benteke and Ayew was ONLY in the amount of stick they get from fans; I wasn't comparing their effectiveness on the pitch. I completely agree with you that on that score, Ayew is far, far more valuable. However, I still don't think Benteke is as completely useless as you make out. I'm not saying many of your observations aren't valid, but overall as a squad striker, I continue to think we could do worse. I wouldn't deny that we could do better, too, particularly at Benteke's price.
