Owens need to take Benteke aside on the training ground and work on his shot and header placement from different angles in live training play. We can’t have him continually just directing ball in a general direction and hoping like mad it finds a corner. There has to be some aiming from him.
The beatings will stop when morale improves. |

Can anyone explain to me why Edouard plays mostly left and Wilf centre when Benteke isn't playing, he never played left for Celtic

Now the dust has settled a little I feel I can post a more measured response. Leeds weren’t great, and didn’t create a lot. But they do have a couple of great players, and to be fair to them they worked really hard and pressed us well. Anderson is a HUGE miss. JT can defend, but he cant really pass. Wen he did play it on the ground the passes weren’t snappy or ahead of the players (He put Marc in trouble a couple of times), so we saw him going long quite a lot. This completely changes the game we play, and so we struggled to build and hold position, hence why the game was so open and scrappy. Leeds helped make this happen by always pushing onto MG leaving JT free to receive the pass from keeper. They would then press him and he’d sh1t himself. Ayew deserves a lot of credit, played a lot of smart football and was important in helping us transition our play. Olise would have struggled if in from the start I think. Midfield was ok, and good to see Hughes get on. But because Tompkins was going long so often, they never really got the ball to feet in the areas they would have liked. Despite the misses Benteke was more effective than OE (though he needs to play as a CF). Gave us an outlet and more of a goal threat, but he’s got to be scoring that header. The pen was unfortunate, headed into his arm at point blank range. Maybe he shouldn’t have had his arm there, but these things happen. Another disappointing result, but given that we are a few important players down we gave it a good go. You cant fault the effort. Lets hope that Anderson is back in time for the weekend, and maybe Hughes can come into the team and now do a job. For me the most glaring issue we have is that our CB’s are vital to playing the way we want to play. And we only have 2 in our squad that can do what we need them to do. We wither need to get some better back up, or learn how to play if we lose either/both to injury.

one of the things that stuck me yesterday was that our lines were very far apart which made it difficult to attack in numbers. It seemed the players were very far apart on numerous occasions. Secondly, there was little movement in the box when we did have people up there. Gallagher seemed to be playing deeper and I think putting Hughes on was an effort to get CG higher up the pitch. We're obviously not playing with our first choice 11 at the moment and that will hopefully change after Christmas with Olise and Eze coming into contention. Hughes as well. I sense there is a bit of tinkering going on from PV, which is part of his learning. We're far from the wheels coming off, as some have said. I see this as part of the process of transition to our style of play and getting our best players back. That said I'd expect PV to keep a degree of flexibility in the 11 and be more of a squad manager as opposed to RH's reluctance to change the 11. Agree that Tomkins' passing on the ground was terrible and PV won't have missed that observation either.

Thought Kouyate, Mitchell and Ayew were excellent - agree with the comment that Ayew just seems completely shot of confidence once he reaches the box, but he ran absolute rings round their left back in the first half. Be some player if he had more of an end product. I don't think many left backs will do a better job of locking up Raphinha this year - Mitchell seems to be growing by the game and I'd imagine Southgate was very happy with what he saw yesterday. Everyone else was ok, I don't think there was many poor performers - Schlupp wasn't massively impactful, but I don't think he was particularly bad - stuck his foot in, couple of nice runs with the ball, and had one of our better efforts with the shot from outside the box. He's one of the more reliable finishers in our squad, which is probably quite worrying. Just want rid of Benteke at this point - too frustrating.

Anyone else notice how p!ssed off Edouard looked to see he'd been sacrificed for that lump? I would've been too... Edited by Sansbup (01 Dec 2021 11.27am)

Hopefully we see a lot more of Riedewald, Hughes and Rak Sakyi this season. Surprised why Riedewald has not featured yet. He is a decent player. Also shows the importance of Mcarthur when he is injured people know how important he is to the side.

The morning after a frustrating night. We weren't great but then I don't think we were pants either. We clearly miss Andersen and McArthur and haven't as yet found the best replacements for them from within the squad. Ayew showed exactly why he plays in certain games. I'm willing him to score again so as to build up some confidence. Good to see Hughes come on and he clearly wanted to get stuck in and impress. He was involved in the few good things we did in the last 10 minutes or so. I'd start him against Manure simply because I think he will provide the energy and tackling that will take some of the pressure off Gallagher who as has been said by others looked really knackered last night. So, Ward will miss the Manure game and Gallagher is 1 yellow away from suspension. Could well see him picking up a yellow against Manure and missing the Everton game.

At least we gave them a game this time. Last season we were pathetic at Elland Rd. One of our best away performances was at the Emirates where interestingly we were without Wilf with Edouard playing wide with Tekkers in the middle, he also scored a cracking goal. Anybody fancy going Wilfless again?

Certainly agree about missing Andersen; Tomkins, whilst a decent defender, looks so uncomfortable when the ball is played to him on the ground and he also seems to unnerve Ward. He also does not have the diagonal in his armoury.
