When you compared previous invasions and migrations to Britain with today's mass immigration, I stopped taking you seriously.
I care little if you take me seriously, beyond recognising that refusal to take someone seriously is a common position to take when people feel challenged. I understand that you feel uncomfortable not being right. That to be frank is your problem. I expect posting here and having Sterling pat you on the back helps.

I have read Heather's book. I think that you will find when you have read it that it does not say what you want it to say. There will always be different interpretations of history. I think that you know and understand this as it is clear that you are clever and able to access information. I think, however, that you are uncomfortable with ideas that don't fit with your worldview. I said that immigration was a factor amongst others. I will buy the book and look to see if the review was inaccurate in also saying that. As for worldviews, everyone has biases and likes and looks to have them confirmed: that's human nature. However, some are more willing to ignore evidence against their worldview than others. Edited by Stirlingsays (12 Sep 2021 12.22am)

early Rome was great because it inducted immigrants and romanized them. Roman citizens were hardworking, motivated and ruthless. Late Rome was weak because immigrants refused to learn the lingo, worship the same gods and refused to pay their taxes. The newcomers also had a parallel legal system ( Courts ), and allegiance to institutions beyond Rome. They had a dislike for the Roman military and undermined it at every turn. Soon afterwards the currency lost its value and hence the power to fight wars diminished. Roman citizens were lazy and preferred to pay somebody else to fight on their behalf. it all sounds just like the UK. 1800 versus today.

Yeah, except that he is talking bollocks. He stated a view. I'm not sure you need to launch into profanities at him due to it. You should enjoy the fact that someone new bothers to put time and effort in. Most people can't compete with the word count of thumb twiddlers who are either retired - or jobless and whining on the working man's dime while they directly benefit from the very same societal empathy they despise.

No. He stated something as fact that is in fact false. Mind your own business. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (12 Sep 2021 11.06am)

Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (12 Sep 2021 11.06am) You claim my position false but you clearly have not read the relevant literature. You are trying to argue a subtle point in a complex area that you are broadly ignorant of. A quick skim through Wikipedia/Google has convinced you that your assumptions have some validity. It's likely that you will ever change your mind. Refusal to access the facts renders you incapable of a reasoned analysis. For you, that's a very safe and cosy position. For everyone else, it's just numbingly dull. Just saying that something is wrong does not make it so. Self-assured bluster is worthless, especially when it is shackled to limited knowledge.

A three-paragraph (and I am being generous here) synopsis of the Wikipedia page on the Roman Empire does not convince anyone that you know the first thing about the subject. The idea that this banal idiotic simplification of 1000 years of history has any value is absurd. Comparing it to contemporary geopolitical situations is ludicrous.

Wikipedia is a bastion of leftist editors. I've already read reviews of this book, that I now have to get, that suggest that poor Roman handling of incoming European immigration was a weakening factor. There are obvious parallels with the breakdown of Roman cohesion with the modern day. Your objections appear purely to be in line with your denialism. Edited by Stirlingsays (12 Sep 2021 3.20pm)

The literature is out there for anyone to read and make up their own minds. Your naive comparisons between today's Britain and the past tells me all I need to know about you. Now please do me a favour and share your 'wisdom' with someone else.

Just as your naive comparisons between Britain today and the fall of the Roman Empire tells me all I need to know about you. I can see that being challenged makes you uncomfortable. I shall, therefore, persevere when time allows.
