Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

I’ve got a variation on your idea. Ban any form of appealing. Period. Nah. The game needs to address the constant, serious & match ruining wrong decisions by refs. I think the speed at the top of the game is maybe just too much for them. Errors have become so prevalent.

What has detracted from this tournament for me is the constant whinging by the players to match officials by both players and touchline staff. Yes, it used to be bad, but this World Cup has taken it to a new level. The number of times I have seen players laying hands on the ref is unbelievable and in a lot of cases, done to implore the use of VAR on borderline decisions that the ref has already made. The pressure being applied to officials is over the top and whilst I agree that officials do make wrong calls, I currently see football heading in the wrong direction. There should be no badgering of the ref and the same courtesy should be shown as it is by rugby players to their referees. Bad mouth the ref and it should be 10 minutes in the sin bin. We have VAR, so let the officials get on with it and accept the decisions, right or wrong. Remember, we are talking about interpretation and not fact in a lot of the controversial incidents. Offside is fact, hand ball is interpretation - they need to live with it.

Errors have become so prevalent. Isn't that what VAR is supposed to do? Help correct major errors although it seems that doesn't happen all the time! If anything I do think it puts more pressure and uncertainty on the officials now. Did get the feeling the Nigerian players put pressure on the regf last night to go and look at that handball incident in the Argentina area at 1-1. Of course as in rugby dissent can be punished with a booking but how many times do we see mainly big name players get away with it every week in the Premier league? Rooney would have been sent off about 10 times a season if the dissent rule had been applied!

With the elimination of Saudi, Egypt, Morocco and Iran, it looks like England is the only islamic country left in the tournament.

I've noticed more than a few times that referees have had to push players away from themselves, at which point the players look at the ref with an air of "do that again and i'll have you done for assault"

if Japan (Poland) & Colombia (Senegal) win tomorrow, I'd like us to throw the Belgium game. In that scenario it's: Japan then Sweden/Switzerland OR, win the group and it's Colombia then Brazil. Madness to beat Belgium. Madness. I know about "you've got to beat the best" but screw it. Lose and we'd have a fantastic shot at the semis and from there anything can happen. Personally I think Colombia would be very difficult for us.

Presumably Belgium will have worked this out too, so as I posted on the England v Panama thread, we could be in for a "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin"-esque match tomorrow, with both sides trying to lose. We could set the world record for the number of own goals in a match.
