The only players that Freedman brought in on his own recommendation were Aaron Wilbraham and the flop striker we had on loan from Southampton (forget the name).
All the others were identified or recommended by Lennie Lawrence, Curtis Fleming and Tony Popovic.
That's to say, all the ones that were any good. You know like Murray, Bolasie, Jedinac

Bolasie signed by Freedman for £350k sold with a profit of £18.8m
Jedanic, Delaney etc. Not to be sniffed at!

Bring back Brolin

Understandably after everything that's happened, people are debating if we need a Director of Football, If FDB is happy with it, if we forgive Dougie for what happened, if it's just a ruse to get Dougie the Manager job.

They are all very exciting points to talk about which is probably why this subject has been glossed over a bit - what the hell qualifications or experience does Dougie have to do this job?

He was a player, than a coach, then a FAILED manager, now a Premier League Director Of Football.

That doesn't seem right to me. I'd love to at least know that since his last Management stint, he's been to University and done a degree in this field.

Going back to the point about whether FDB is happy to have a DoF, I think it's evident he is as he has always had one but why would he listen to the likes of Freedman? He's not a DoF, he's a random club legend that has been slapped with a new Title.

So pretty much exactly the same career path as Les Reed, who has been extremely successful since he has been at Southampton.

Well, I've re-listened to the HOL interview, I've read the whole thread here, and I STILL don't understand this appointment, its timing, or how it actually happened. There was no hint or rumour that we were looking right now, no gossip (that I've seen), no other names in the frame, no betting odds for us to lol over, none of the usual media paraphenalia. So did SP just ring him up and say "Hi Dougie, I've got a job for you, let bygones be bygones, and btw you start on Monday".

Why is that a bad thing? That we might get something done without someone writing a rumour about it?

Quote

Other posters have argued that we have needed a Director for a while, so why now? And then there's the 'theory' that he's there in case FDB fails badly - laughable to me. So maybe SP has been mulling this for a while but the timing wasn't right before, maybe he also ran it past FDB from the start but wasn't able to activate it until now... But as I say, without any kind of information (fact or fiction) I can't begin to get my head round it. Personally I've no objection to the post, I've no great hatred for DF because of past errors of judgement, and I think he's a pretty shrewd thinker - apart from the Bolton debacle...

Why now? Why not? If it's been needed for awhile why put it off any longer?

Dougie had a knack for signing quality and I welcome his return.

Surprised he hasn't insisted that Lenny Lawrence join him in his new role.

If it helps, I spent some time with Dougie Freedman a few years back. We were on the same coaching course, he had just taken on the reserves at Palace (I think) having been mentored by Warnock.

Freedman came across as a polite but reserved man. Happy to talk frankly about football when approached, but certainly not one for the pub or the limelight. Even considering that many of the class didn't know each other, I was still surprised at how distant he seemed. Plenty of big names in our class relaxed and thawed out, but Dougie remained slightly detached. He was meticulous and very professional, and though he loved football he was at pains to avoid any of the celebrity side of it, and seemed to be there exclusively for the qualification rather than to make friends with anyone. I found professional footballers to be a nice bunch, but it is a bit of a closed shop / old pals network sort of gig, so Freedman stood out as bit by showing no interest in forming contacts or social climbing.

His attitude to being a Palace legend sort of summed him up. He was very appreciative of what palace had given him, and proud of what he had given back, but these seemed like professional achievements more than emotional ones. He lived in Essex rather than South London partly because he wasn’t comfortable with being a ‘legend’ as he went about his daily business. When he became manager I think a lot of us saw a continuation of Dougie the player, this brilliant, skilful, imaginative goalscorer who gave Palace so many highlights and was so loved for it, and couldn’t accept that he could break that bond to go to Bolton. In actual fact, whether as a player or a manager I think we are talking about a very professional man rather than an emotional one. He played for and managed us because we were his best employment option, gave us full value for money and then some every time, and that’s doubtless what he’ll be doing this time round.

He’s a serious guy, will be here for serious reasons. It's irrelevant that he played here, managed here, and left here before.

Frankly I don't know why it's DF, but I can see having a Sporting Director could be useful.
FDB knows Europe, and I'm sure people will take his calls (I doubt the big clubs know who DF is, let alone take his calls.)

BUT one area why I think DF could help is selling our surplus squaddies to Championship teams. While I'm sure they'd take FDBs call, he has to focus on getting players in, not convincing Leeds to buy Mutch, Wolves to buy Sako or Bolton to buy Lee back.

DF may be clueless in the Prem and Europe, but he could be useful selling to lower league team, or identifying and getting diamonds in the rough.

Still don't know why it had to be DF though!

Sadly, I cant see any other reason for bringing him in.
I just pray even harder now that Frank makes it work, and stays!

If DF is "clueless" because he hasn't managed in the Premiership doesn't that make all of HOLs subscribers clueless too?

You obviously have little faith in Steve Parish's ability as a chairman then

I doubt many of us would fulfill the minimum requirements of the Sporting Director job. But I'm sure there are more than a few who are sure they could do a better job than DF.
