Can I ask all who have stated how great Australia is to explain to me why, if it's so amazing, do so many Australians come over here to live?

It's an easy place to live. But I just felt like I'd done everything there was to do there. And there is no option for something different without jumping on a plane for f***ing ages and dealing with a week of jet lag each side. It also felt like every year repeated itself. Same events at the same time of year. Year after year. When you're involved heavily in the expat scene like I was, you either get involved and do that same thing with all your friends or there is literally nothing much else going on.

Infinitely nicer than the US and slightly ahead of NZ. Why do Aussies come to live here? Probably jobs and or family roots but I've never known any to stay permanently or cut their ties to Oz.

The clubs, the arts, the history and culture must blow their minds. Then on top of that the clout of the pound and the proximity to the rest of the world make England a very attractive prospect.

Love this site. A thread that starts about some poor bleeder getting jumped from behind by cowardly spammer Neanderthals morphs in a dozen pages to the pros and cons of living Down Under. If I started a thread about tap dancing, how many pages do you think before people are comparing recipes for cup cakes?

The OP needs to be more aware before engaging in 'banter ' - especially with West Ham fans 2. Tap dancing ? - Don't see as much of that you used to and 3.
2. 3.

My sister comes over from Oz every summer and this year she kept saying what a cheap holiday it was for her due to sterling's weakness

Just returned to Aus a few days ago from a trip. Still coming down after the energy of it all. London is Sydney on steroids. Loved every minute of it. Brentmeister is bang on. Its a shame that my home suburb of Thornton Heath isn't up there with Brixton, Islington,Camden etc., but I hold out hope (we're on the up and up - we've got a Costa now. Loved the satire the Central London dweller who posited that South London is all about an attitude in the way that you walk and talk etc. etc..... Re. the attack at Norwood Junction - I know from distant experience getting king-hit like that is not good. There will always be cowardly meatheads at football matches. Don't encourage them. Also was lucky enough to get a ticket close to the HF. Disappointing result, but what a great atmosphere and experience. I always put the mockers on them. Last time was a shocker against Swansea (0-2 but Swansea could have had 5 or 6.
We are the goon squad and we're going to town. Beep Beep! |

Catching this debate a little late but having lots of family in Oz, WA & Victoria and frequently visit the place I do have an option on this. I am heading out there in a December to spend Christmas in Melbourne and in truth I am not overly excited. Given the choice I would much rather be in Europe. We have so much on our doorstep that so many Aussies are jealous of. Within a two hour flight you can be skiing in the alps, beaching it in the Med or walking around the unrivalled historical cities of Europe like Rome. The cities are ok in Oz but essentially it's a big uninhabitable rock/desert with a few cities dotted around the edge which all offer pretty much the same thing. Like other HOLers I found it pretty boring compared to Europe or the States and is really not worth the expense or jet lag. Anything you can do in Oz you can do a lot closer and a lot cheaper. Oh and the beer is terrible!!
