Don't believe the hype! Austin is a decent striker but not yet a proven striker in the Premier League. Yes he scored lots of goals in a s***e team but their problem never was scoring. They leaked goals. QPR are asking silly money as he is English. Did they pay that much a year ago? He is not that much better. I also love the way we as a fan group are now at the stage of 'It's only £15 million.' That's a lot of money. It's a fair chunk of a redeveloped main stand. It's never just about the money it's value for money.

Gestede possibly going for 8/9 million, we apparently offered over 9 million for Gomis ( 30 year old), Ross Mcormack 11 million last year. You think the 3 Englishman are overpriced? Why.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Charlie Austin (rumour)' by james03 Think I'd rather give John Guidetti a chance on a free. Looked good in the u21 tournament and would save a lot of money. Plus if cabaye was to sign I don't think scoring goals will be a problem. The money could then be spent on a defender.

I am sure we will get someone of that ilk in, but maybe someone nearer the bottom end of the range like N'Doye from Hull, rather than Austin? Its all a bit of a lottery and hopefully Pardew will pull an obscure french striker out of the locker, who nobody's heard of, who will stick 20 goals away!

My sense of what is rational in today's transfer market may reveal that I am stuck in the past, but I just can't get my head around the idea that we will spend £15m (or whatever it would take) to buy one player. I guess we will have to at some point if we are to stay in the Premier League, but I don't know if we have reached that stage yet. I agree with you, its gonsmacking, both that players can cost that much, and that Palace can even think about paying that ammoint of dosh!

Well, in my opinion, Berahino aside, they've only done it for one season which I don't think constitutes paying a ridiculous premium or substantially more than the equivalent Championship players. As for Berahino himself, he's just about ambled into double figures for the past two seasons I believe (very similar player to Gayle IMO and only marginally better) yet has been talked of as 'England's saviour'...thank heavens Harry Kane put an end to that. Back to the other two, there's no doubt they know where the goal is but as others have pointed out, Austin was part of QPR's gun ho approach which saw them leak lots of goals and Burnley weren't too compact either (sure pens added to both tallies too?). I'd prefer Jordan Rhodes myself, pay 10-12 million for a player who simply cannot stop scoring, wherever, whenever and however. Edited by rawpalace05 (04 Jul 2015 6.31pm)
