I watched Southampton’s play off games,including the final today , and Downes has been outstanding in their success.
As many of you probably know, Downes was on the point of joining us a couple of seasons ago with Freedman having lined him up, only for West Ham to snatch him at the last minute.
For whatever reason, Moyes didn’t really give him an opportunity at West Ham, but he looks a quality player (like a less good version of Wharton)!
Perhaps that’s a blessing as we now have the superior Wharton , but it’s a further indication of Freedman’s eye for potential as I’m convinced Downes will be a good Premier League player.
