I assumed they want him to ultimately forge a partnership with Lerma rather than replace him as a starter. Doucoure will then have to fight for his place next season. Jairo yes, but getting rid of Hughes. Really? I can see him remaining in situ as regular bench warmer, cup player, damage limiter / lead holder, and starter in extremis if we suffer another glut of injuries as we did tale end of last year.
Doucoure was our POTY last year and it is well-stated that his injury leaves us woefully short in the CDM department. If Wharton is to replace anyone, I would suggest it is more likely to be Lerma.

Doucoure has an injury that has left him out of the team for the whole season. Those sort of injuries can mean a career end or a return of a player who is not the POTY player we want back.

I'm definitely pro this signing but for me does raise some questions. Does he come straight into the first 11 (replacing Richards)? Is the intention that next season he replaces Lerma or Docoure? I'm presuming he'll be above Ozoh (and hughes and Jairo) in the pecking order? Assuming the above do we need to quickly find a loan for Ozoh? Spent a couple of hours this afternoon looking at videos of Wharton. From what I’ve seen I reckon he would play well alongside Doucoure but not so much alongside Lerma. If you throw Ozoh into the mix, then to me this would leave Doucoure, Lerma, Ozoh and Wharton for two spaces in the side. This of course relegates Richards back to where he should be as first swap at CH and largely makes Riedewald and Hughes redundant. As a result I reckon we could see them both move on in the summer along with Tomkins and Clyne and possibly Schlupp. Assuming no sales of core players I would see our squad looking more balanced as follows: Goalkeepers That’s a half decent 25 player squad (with a couple that could be played as youngsters so don’t need to b in the squad), but there is obviously room for improvement and the addition of quality in the forward positions particularly.

Lets not forget Liverpool were in for him this summer, before the injury I wouldn't have been surprised if we saw him move end of the season. However, the season injury will probably scare of a few clubs due to not knowing how badly he will be effected. Edited by A89M (30 Jan 2024 4.41pm)

I dont see why people are saying who he replaces , thats so and so out the door and suchlike . The whole point and what we have lacked as opposed to much of our premier league opposition is the depth of squad ability to rotate ect . In short there is room for everyone

I wonder if Parish is keen to push this through today so that the atmosphere at SP will be less toxic? Announcing two signings the day of arguably our biggest game so far this season would be a big lift even if neither are actually going to play. Yes, i think, although i am very pleased with the signings, i can imagine the atmosphere at the end of the game, no signings, no points, so good PR from Parish and i am sure Andersen and Co will be pleased and hopefully be motivated by it.

If Parish lands Wharton I’ll be glad all over again. What a solid nucleus him, Lerma, Hughes and Doucoure would be allowing us to switch things up a bit , rest and rotate players according to the game plan. Edited by XKudu (30 Jan 2024 5.51pm)

You need cover for all positions and we have suffered this year because we are constantly playing players out of positions. I would rather see a balanced squad than having players who ‘have a go’ at a different position.

Spot on. 2 players for every position, other than 3 keepers and strikers plus one other, should be what we are aiming for. And in reality after 10 years should really be. My complaint has been the lack of depth in the squad. That has been the worse it has been since we were promoted. The first starting players may be better but our bench options have been so poor. My only concern is attacking options still are poor. Originally posted by Eaglecoops

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Adam Wharton' by becky I like the look of this, but has anyone told Roy? He's far too young to get a game in the first team... How much will we have spent on young talent that doesn't get a chance to play?!
You'll be forever in my family's memories and it was an honor and privilege to play and lead in the red and blue |
